One aspect of the story that really drew me in was the clear statement of inclusion vs. exclusion, especially for Jin Wang. Compared to the welcoming and inviting environment of his apartment home in San Francisco is his new school, where even at lunch he finds himself alone and with no one to talk to, two entirely different settings and ideas of how Jin feels in his community.

insightful and emotion read that takes a dive into what identifying American born Chinese folks face living in America. Reading and seeing the images, triggered me in the many moments random people ask me, "where are you REALLY from?" The mocking, discrimination, was subtle yet hurtful and I could see it in the pictures. There's a theme of dignity, self-discovery when navigating as a bi-cultural person in America. I also noticed that Jin was a very intuitive since a young boy, and that intuition follows him even in moments when others/outsiders say differently to what he believes. (i.e. herbalist) After reading my partner's comments, I noticed the amount of descriptors highlighting movement in sound in the reading.

What pulls me into this story is how sad this little boy Jin must feel but he is resigned to it. I want to keep reading to see if he is able to find happiness. I hate to think that he will feel this way about his new home and new school for ever.

I also feel that there is strength in Jin's "resolution" that is beyond his years that makes me sad that now only Jin but the kind boy as well is hurting, not only from the other students but from his mother, grandmother and teacher...all adults that should protect him.

What I can make of what I just read is very bleak to start out with. I feel Jin's aloneness, shame and resolution of "not again." I want a happy ending for JIn so I will keep reading and hope to find that either Jin steps up and says enough is enough or people in the story realize what is happening and they change.

Without going into too much detail, I was also taken with Carlos' interest in the herbalist's warning. It will come back as a theme in the book (and that's all I'll say about that). For now, I would urge that this book deals with the cost of transformation (personal, social, etc.) if one doesn't consider transforming their society for the better, too.

I also felt that the herbalist's comment "forfeit your soul" stuck out as well. Unfortunately, I interpreted this remark as a negative foreshadow for what may happen to Jin as he explores this new community that's drastically different from San Francisco. Rather than putting his feelings or the "negativity" to the side to be his true self, he may completely disregards his identity as an Asian-American to blend in to the whole. It would be interesting to see if this does happen in the story as it would show how being excluded can lead to complete abandonment of an individual's identity.
