At home, we feed hummingbirds with  a feeder. Everytime I refill the feeder, I like to watch the birds fly up to the feeder. Sometimes they fly near me and sometimes they appear when we are away from the feeder. They're very fascinating creatures to me and I wanted to challenge myself to build one from wood and glue. 

Process:
When beginning my project, I looked for inspiration. I found an image that looked like a 2D Geometric Hummingbird Cut Out. I observed the way they bird was built and tried to apply what I saw in 3D. I built the bird mostly from imagination and without a real plan. I built the head, wings, and neck without a plan. When I got to the body, I had trouble imagining how to build it. My dad helped me design a body, but I had to tweak a few things with imagination to get the body just right. Next, I attached the body, head, neck, and wings together. Then I added feathers for the tail using different lengths wood. For the feet, I was inspired by a other classmate's work. 

Tools/Process:
The tools I used were the ruler (not pictured), wood cutter, pen, glue gun, and filing tool. 

The ruler and pen helped me measure and mark the wood, so that I could cut the wood to the proper length using the wood cutter. After the wood cutter, I used the filing tool to smooth the cut edge. Next, I glued everything together. 

What I learned along the way:
- Measure everything twice. 
- Don't use so much glue. A little goes a long way and makes the bonds stronger. 
- Re-enforce weaker joints (where two pieces of wood meet) with more wood and glue. 
- Use Heavy Duty Fishing Line & a hook to hang. 
- Do use inspiration. 
- Sketch out a plan when you're stuck. If the plan doesn't work, use imagination and common sense to solve th problem. 
- Think proportionally. 

Overall Thoughts:
I am happy with my work. I have never build anything 3D using wood and glue before, so I am elated that it turned out well.

I started with the 4-triangle structure from the previous module and decided to build something off of it.

Many of the previous projects for this class took extra time for planning and execution, so I wanted to try a different approach. This time, I held the idea of a spiral fractal in mind and decided to simply play by creating more pyramids of different sizes and sticking them on wherever it 'felt' right in the moment. 

I started by free-gluing the pyramids in a twisting shape and adding lines to each of the points on the same plane (triangles). Waiting for the triangles to dry gave me time to think about my next move and I thought I was being careful with each placement. However, I soon discovered that building spiral-ing pyramids in a larger spiral is not something that should be eyeballed, so I switched gears and built the outline with thicker balsa wood segments. Additional lines were added to try and create the inward turning movement of a spiral. 

The most interesting part was deciding the angle of the base. I wanted the extra challenge of putting the heavier, 'tighter' spiral section at the top, so it took a lot of time to find the correct balance and re-enforcing it with lines that did not disrupt the shape or volume too much. I think I was only partially successful.
