  and Franklin Buchanan. The Union lost 500 men the Confederate lost 100 men. Iron ships gave much armor and large guns. The Ironclads armor was so thick , neither ship could do and major damage to the other! Shell after shell so little damage was done. The captain decided to replenish the monitors ammo before returning to battle. The captain himself was wounded when a shell struck a viewing silt.

It was built because of the capture and replacement of the USS Virginia. The USS Virginia was one of the biggest ships when the Confederates boarded it and put armor a steam powered engine.
