It was very important to Atticus that Jem better understood Mrs. Dubose and the things she was going through so that they would not treat her poorly. Mrs. Dubose was an old and very sick woman who wanted to die without being on medications. The old woman became very rude to the children because of how sick she had become and she was not taking her medicine. Atticus had told the children multiple times that she was very sick and not to mind the things she yells at them. Jem disobeyed atticus and could not listen to Mrs. Dubose say such terrible things about their father. Jem became very angry and tore all of her camellias from her yard. from that day on Jem and Scout had to read to the old women every day for a month. After the month ended Mrs. Dubose past away. Atticus sat with jem and told him of Mrs. Dubose morphine and how she wanted to die without being an addicttg . This is what Atticus believed was true courage was and this is what Atticus wanted Jem to learn.

Atticus wanted Jem to understand Mrs. Dubose and what she was going through because it was a sin to kill the mockingbird because all they do is bring happiness into the people's lives. They don't kill the flowers or make nests in bad areas. Also not the hate the old woman for her yelling at him, because she is old and lonely because she is an old person. (and they can get cranky). Also because atticus will have a lot of rumors going around about him being a n**ger lover. He wanted Jem to learn that there is more to someone than to what they see. All they saw was a cranky old woman, but she was this way because life was rough on her and she was ill. Jem wanted to make sure to raise his kids right by them being respectful and open minded.

Atticus believed that it was important for Jem to understand Mrs. Dubose because Atticus will soon have a lot of rumors going around about him. Atticus wanted Jem to understand that there is more to someone than meet the eye. Boo Radley also had rumors spread about him and people don't know the whole story. Jem didn't know why Mrs. Dubose was always crabby, but it was because she had a rough life and she was sick. Atticus plays nice. He always made the kids respect others, whether they respected him or not. No matter how mean people were, he always rose above. I think he was also proving that to Scout. Scout wasn't good at keeping her cool, especially when kids ran their mouths about Atticus like Mrs. Dubose and the kids at school. She liked to fight but now that Atticus had the trials coming up, he needed her to keep her cool. So when Mrs. Dubose ran her mouth and Jem got revenge, Atticus wasn't okay with it. He wanted them to ignore what people were saying about him. He didn't want his kids to stoop lower and become involved in the drama of his job. Mrs. Dubose called Atticus a n***** lover just like Francis did. He wanted the kids to be above the drama and rumors spread. Basically the importance of the kids helping Mrs. Dubose was to teach Jem how to keep his temper, because shortly in the future they would have to do that a lot.

Atticus wanted Jem to understand what Mrs Dubose was going through. Atticus was also going to have people saying a lot of people shaming his name because he was going to be representing Tom Robinson, a colored man. In this time period colored people were looked down upon and thought of as lesser of a person than a white person. Atticus also wants Jem to be around her because of her bold racist remarks. Mrs dubose was en elderly woman who suffered from morphine addiction, she was slowly trying to remove herself from the morphine, which was slowly killing her. Atticus admired her for this action and said it was a very courageous act, and wanted Jem to see what courage was.

It was important to Atticus that Jem better understood what Mrs. Dubose was going through so he knew how to deal with something like this later in life. In the story Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict. She had been an addict for many years until she was told she was going to die. In the book Atticus says, "She said she was going to leave this world beholden by nothing and nobody." It also says, "She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that's what she did."(pg.148) This shows that she had problems that Atticus thought Jem could learn from. Another reason Atticus thought Jem needed to understand Mrs. Dubose more, was so he know why he had to help her. Atticus told Jem that even if he hadn't done anything to Mrs. Dubose he still would have had to go read to her. Once Jem found out Mrs. Dubose had died and that he was reading to her to calm her I think his thoughts about it changed. In chapter 12 the book says, "Mrs. Dubose was not cold in her grave-Jem seemed grateful enough for my company when we went to read to her."(pg. 153) I think this shows that Jem knew he was doing something good to help her. Overall I think Atticus wanted to show Jem what real courage was. He did this by having him read even if he didn't want to. He needed to do it because it was the right thing to do.

It was very important to Atticus that Jem better understand Mrs. Dubose and what she was going through. Mrs. Dubose was very grouchy because she was very sick. He than wanted to know more about her after he found out that she had been very ill. She told Jem it was a sin to kill a mockingbird because they have done nothing to the people in the world. She also believed that Jem would soon have a lot of rumors going around about him. If Jem didn't know Mrs. Dubose's background, than he would of never played nice with here and listened to her. "WHen you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyways and you see it through no matter what" - Atticus. "I meant to break myself before I died"- Mrs, Dubose. This shows that she had problems that she got fixed before she died. Mrs. Dubose knew this way of thinking but she never gave up. These are a few reasons why it was important to Atticus that Hem better understood Mrs. Dubose and what she was going through.

Atticus wanted Jem to know why he had to go read to Mrs. Dubose so he wouldn't think bad of having to go and read. He thought that Jem would think badly of her if he didn't know the real reason for going to read. She was a morphine addict and she was suffering through quitting that addiction. She was so focused on when the alarm clock would go off, Jem was there basically to be a distraction. Atticus told Jem that if he hadn't gotten in trouble with Mrs. Dubose in the first place he still would've made Jem go read to her. Atticus even said that she was showing true courage through her last few months up until when she died. He wanted Jem to learn what true courage was and that true courage isn't always visible at first glance but you have to look deeper to find it.

Also Atticus will have a lot of rumors going around about him soon and he wants Jem to be able to keep his head and try to understand that people say things when they are upset. Mrs.Dubose told Jem that it was a sin to kill a mockingbird because all they do is make music for everyone to hear. This could relate to how Atticus is only trying to help a person and that should not be a sin even though people think it is not right. Atticus also wanted Jem to understand what real courage was. He said that Mrs. Dubose showed real courage. Atticus didn't want Jem to think that courage is a man with a gun because Jem watched Atticus shoot the dog instead of the officer because the officer knew Atticus would not miss. He wanted Jem to know courage is,
"When you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyways and you see it through no matter what" - Atticus. Mrs.Dubose knew this but she never gave up she earned every last breath she had and she told herself she would not die being an addict and she held through to this, even with all the fits she would have because of it. Through reading to Mrs.Dubose Jem learned what Atticus said to be real courage.
