Thermohaline Circulation: SLOWING DOWN

Definition: "Winds drive ocean currents in the upper 100 meters of the ocean’s surface. However, ocean currents also flow thousands of meters below the surface. These deep-ocean currents are driven by differences in the water’s density, which is controlled by temperature (thermo) and salinity (haline). This process is known as thermohaline circulation."

The release of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere has contributed to the melting of polar ice caps. This has led to increases levels of freshwater in the ocean. These higher levels of freshwater in the ocean has led to less dense surface water that no longer sinks: meaning the process of thermohaline circulation is slowing.

If thermohaline were to shutdown, oxygen would no longer be circulating in the ocean. On top of the drastic climate changes that would follow, a mass extinction in the ocean would occur. Organisms would die off at alarming rates until there are no living organisms left in the oceans. Once the oceans become a toxic dead zone, anything within a 50 mile radius will die as well and everything will smell like rotten eggs. The shutdown of thermohaline circulation will start a massive domino affect to the extinction of thousands of species.
https://sciblogs.co.nz/hot-topic/2012/03/11/the-five-scariest-things-about-climate-change/
