Furthermore, Newman (2010 p3) states, 'sustainability of major cities is reliant on a certain percentage of the population remaining on farms in rural areas in order to produce enough food for their continuation'.

Therefore, big cities have seen a reduction of the rate of emigration due to various push-pull factors, which has caused a balancing of the numbers of people in rural and metropolitan areas to a sustainable level; this is mainly based on the need for agricultural services, i.e. farming.
