we develop an understanding of and practice the procedures required to perform a professional manicure and pedicure service using various polishing techniques and products. Topics of study include structure, diseases and disorders of the hand and foot with a focus on decontamination protocols.

NUTR1003 Nutrition and Wellness

Maintaining optimum health and wellness is necessary for a balanced life. In this course, we explore many dimensions of wellness for mind, body and spirit. Topics include stress management, nutritional requirements for optimum health, and practical techniques to promote overall personal well-being.

ESTH1021 Skin Care 1

Beginning with an in-depth client consultation form, we learn to analyze the skin and recognize different skin types. we learn a full European facial treatment including cleansing, skin analysis, toning, exfoliation, masks and moisturizing.

ESTH1012 Spa Clinic 1

In this foundational course, we learn spa workplace health and safety, infection control procedures, and day-to-day spa operations using point of sale software. Orientation to working with clients is also included as a foundation to the Spa Clinic 2 course.

ESTH1020 The Spa Industry

In this course, we focus on an introduction to the spa industry and various career paths available for qualified estheticians and spa managers. we begin the development of a comprehensive skills portfolio, which will be expanded throughout the two-year program as my skills advance. On-campus training certificates with industry partners will give me an advantage as I can utilize my portfolio for placement and employment interviews.

Communication for Spa Therapists
In the spa industry, how we talk to people matters just as much as the treatments we offer. This course helps you become confident and professional in how you communicate with clients, coworkers, and even difficult guests. You'll learn about body language, tone of voice, listening skills, and how to handle real-life customer service scenarios the right way.

Manicures & Pedicures
Time to get hands-on! This course is where you learn the step-by-step process of giving high-quality manicures and pedicures using modern products and techniques. You'll also learn about nail structure, common disorders, and how to keep your tools and space safe and hygienic.

Nutrition and Wellness
As a spa professional, your clients will look to you for advice on how to feel good from the inside out. In this course, you’ll explore the connection between nutrition, mental health, and daily wellness habits. You’ll learn stress management techniques and wellness routines that support a healthy lifestyle—for you and your future clients.

Skin Care 1
Skin is the body’s largest organ—and in this course, you’ll get to know it up close. Starting with a proper consultation, you’ll learn how to analyze skin types and conditions, then perform a full facial from start to finish. Expect to practice cleansing, exfoliating, using masks, and applying moisturizers that are tailored to different skin needs.

Spa Clinic 1
Your journey into real spa life begins here. You’ll get introduced to basic spa procedures like health & safety, client etiquette, using spa software, and how to professionally set up a workspace. This course sets the stage for working confidently in a real spa environment later on.

The Spa Industry
This is where you discover all the exciting paths your spa career could take! From skincare and makeup to wellness retreats and spa ownership, you’ll learn what’s out there. You’ll also begin creating your professional portfolio, filled with skills, certificates, and projects that’ll help you land internships and jobs.

Anatomy and Physiology
A solid understanding of the human body helps you deliver safe, effective treatments. This course focuses on the body’s systems—like the skin, muscles, and circulatory system—so you know how your treatments impact the client’s overall health. You’ll also learn how to recognize when something isn’t safe to treat.

Field Placement 1
Your first real-world experience! You'll spend time working in a spa or beauty retail space, observing and assisting professionals. It's a chance to make connections, see what a day in the industry looks like, and reflect on what kind of spa career you want.

Hair Removal
Say goodbye to unwanted hair—professionally, of course. In this course, you’ll learn how to do facial and body waxing safely and effectively. You'll also get introduced to trending techniques like sugaring, threading, and the basics of laser and electrolysis.

Make-up Artistry
Time to bring out your creative side. Learn how to apply makeup for different skin types, face shapes, and occasions—from natural day looks to full glam wedding styles. You’ll also get to experiment with tools like airbrush guns and lash strips.

Professional Portfolio
You’ll work on putting together your best work in a clean and professional way, creating a portfolio you can show to future employers or use when applying for internships. This includes photos, service records, certificates, and other things that prove your skills.

We take skincare deeper—literally. You’ll learn how to treat specific skin conditions using advanced treatments and electrical machines. This is where science and beauty meet, and your knowledge of ingredients and skin analysis really grows.

Spa Clinic 2
Now that you’ve got the basics, you’ll begin applying your advanced skills with real clients in the on-campus spa. You’ll also start learning about spa marketing, rebooking strategies, product recommendations, and client education.

Spa Marketing & Communication
Let’s face it: Even the best spa needs strong marketing. This course teaches you how to write clear messages, create social media posts, and prepare business presentations. You'll also develop computer skills that are useful for everyday spa work.

General Education Elective

Advanced Nail Treatments
This is where your nail skills go next level. You’ll work with gel products, tips, sculpting, and modern nail art. It’s hands-on and creative—perfect for showing off your artistry and adding wow-factor to your portfolio.

Body Treatments 1
You’ll learn techniques for full-body relaxation and wellness, including Swedish massage and hot stone therapy. We also talk about client care, health screenings, and how to create a peaceful spa experience from start to finish.

Sales and Social Enterprise
This course teaches you how to turn your skills into a successful business. You’ll learn how to promote services, grow your client list, use Instagram and other platforms for marketing, and connect with your local community.

Skin Care 3
Clients are always looking for younger, healthier-looking skin. This course teaches you how to deliver anti-aging treatments using professional tools like microdermabrasion and advanced peels. You’ll also explore aromatherapy and specialized products.

Spa Clinic 3
You’ll continue working with real clients and building your confidence in performing services and giving personalized product recommendations. You’ll also practice front desk duties and professional spa behavior.

Spa Management 1
Want to run a spa someday? This course is for you. You’ll learn how to manage a team, create a productive environment, use software to track sales, and even read financial reports.

🌿 Semester 4 – Preparing for the Real World

Advanced Spa Therapies
Take your skills to the medical-spa level with treatments like IPL and ultrasound. You’ll also discuss cosmetic surgeries, skincare science, and ingredients used in advanced facial treatments.

Body Treatments 2
This course helps you customize body treatments for individual needs. You’ll build on what you learned earlier by offering tailored services, stress therapy, and home care plans to keep your guests glowing long after they leave.

Field Placement 2
Your final placement is where you bring everything together—70 hours of hands-on experience in a spa or esthetics business of your choice. You’ll network, learn from professionals, and maybe even find a job opportunity.

Spa Clinic 4
Now it’s your turn to lead. You’ll perform services, manage bookings, handle spa operations, and make real-time decisions—all while working in the college’s spa. This course is all about confidence, independence, and getting job-ready.

Spa Management 2
We go deeper into the business side of things—exploring hiring, payroll, health and safety laws, government rules, and how to build a successful spa business. You’ll also practice using software for accounting and financial reporting.

Visual Merchandising
People shop with their eyes first! In this course, you’ll learn how to create beautiful retail displays, choose the right colors, decorate for seasons or events, and wrap products like a pro. It’s a great way to boost sales and impress clients.

My primary role involved assisting customers with their beauty needs, which ranged from skincare consultations to makeup recommendations. This hands-on experience was invaluable, as it not only honed my interpersonal skills but also deepened my understanding of product knowledge and application techniques. Observing the diverse clientele and their varying needs underscored the importance of personalization in esthetics—a lesson I will carry with me into future practices.

One of the key learnings from my placement was the significance of staying abreast with the latest beauty trends and products. Shoppers Drug Mart's cosmetics department prides itself on offering a wide array of brands and products, and part of my role involved learning about these products to provide informed recommendations to customers. This constant learning process was both challenging and exciting, as it fueled my passion for the beauty industry and broadened my knowledge base.

Moreover, the importance of hygiene and cleanliness, especially in the context of COVID-19, was a critical aspect of my training. Learning about and implementing strict infection control practices within the cosmetics department was a responsibility I took seriously, ensuring the safety and well-being of both the customers and staff.

Overall, my co-op placement at Shoppers Drug Mart was a remarkable experience that allowed me to grow professionally and personally. It provided me with a deeper appreciation for the complexities of the beauty industry and reinforced my desire to pursue a career in esthetics. During my co-op placement at Beauty Works Spa, I completed a 70 hour hands-on learning experience that significantly enriched my understanding of advanced esthetic services and professional spa operations. As a student in the Esthetics and Spa Management program, this opportunity allowed me to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world practice in a high-end, client-focused environment.

At Beauty Works, I was exposed to a wide range of services beyond the basics — including advanced facials like OxyGeneo, chemical peels, body contouring, laser hair removal, and radio frequency treatments. Observing and assisting with these cutting-edge procedures gave me a deeper appreciation for how science and skincare come together to deliver visible, lasting results. I also gained insight into treatment protocols, contraindications, consultation techniques, and the importance of customizing every service to suit individual skin types and concerns.

My daily responsibilities included setting up treatment rooms, maintaining hygiene standards, preparing tools and products, and assisting senior estheticians during services.
