The world was a forest with wild  beasts far beyond the waters Max sailed. The task for Max was to tame the wild things he stumbled upon. Once he tamed them, he became king of the wild things and sent them to sleep without their supper. He left the wild things after his task was completed because he didn't feel loved where he was. The wild things are guided by Max and see him as "the wildest of all things" then set him as their king. The wild things provide a foil to Max by finding them and making it his task to tame them. The wild things cry and beg for Max to stay once he starts sailing away. "Oh,please don't go we'll eat you up-we love you so!". Maurice Sendak shows the mother to be the other even from the beginning. After Max "made mischief" the mother sent Max to bed "without eating". Maurice Sendak is showing the mother being inherently dangerous to her son and the mother being so focused on punishing Max that this causes the mother to display traits of an other. However, Maurice Sendak also shows Max displaying traits of other. Sendak presents obstacles, which the magic child has to overcome to learn a lesson at the end. Max's mischief gets him ,"sent to bed" ( At 5) and naturally he gets upset. Being a magic child he is taken to a photo world where he ," sails off" (At 9) and away from discipline. Sendak places Max in an alternate world where he is surrounded by ,"wild things"(At 10) just like himself. As the magic child, he is the chosen one to be the king of these untamed monsters. Max at first loves the idea of the freedom to be wild and rule over the wild things, but gets," lonely" ( At 17) and realizes hes that hes not fit to take authority. He comes to the conclusion that he wants and needs someone to take care of him and fulfill his needs.
