According to the legend, lord moon was married to the 27 daughters of daksha prajapati but he was partial to rohini who was the youngest amongst all the daughters and neglected the rest. He was very proud of his beauty . daksha prajapati warned lord moon about his negligence towards his other daughter but lord moon didn’t listen to him. So he cursed moon that the beauty of which he is so proud will fade away and he will loose his lustre. So lord moon went to brahma deva for advise. Brahma deva advised him a rigorous penance at this place to get rid of the sin. Pleased with him lord shiva blessed him and made him sin free.
