In my opinion, interdisciplinary teaching is the most important way in order to help students understand how the world functions and how things are related to each other. I think the basis of interdisciplinarity is language and mathematics as almost every other field of science uses parts of these areas. However, it is difficult for a teacher to be an expert in all fields at once and that's what makes interdisciplnary teaching so difficult for us.

We can travel with our mind far away, we can dare, we can accomplish our dreams than are not seems to be in our powers. Yet, we don't have to forget the history of the human kind. Too often amazing science discoveries were used in a wrong way. Do you remember nuclear energy? First we build a bomb then a nuclear power plant. It is up to us to be responsable. Some choices are hard to make, some decisions are difficult to take. We need to dream with our eyes wide open and both feet on firm ground. I believe that the human kind evolution ( as a society) must keep the pace with the advancement of the life science. And this is the main task of the education.

Examples of how new discoveries can contribute to progress in life sciences are numerous. Just compare the microscope I studied with 30 years ago compared to the one my students use today connected via USB to a computer, producing sharper images that students can analyse more comfortably! However, probably the biggest change that is revolutionising life sciences just like it is driving the biggest changes in all other science disciplines is the use of IT. In life sciences IT can be used in the production of simulations, the enhancement of laboratory practices and computation of data especially where enormous amounts of data are involved.
As for ways in which this could be taught in an interdisciplinary way, probably the best approach is a thematic, cross-curricular approach. In Malta for instance there is a new core science syllabus being written right now that will be targeting mostly students who do not want to specialise in the sciences. Each topic will revolve around a theme. For example the theme would be ‘By the Beach’ and in the same topic students would learn about waves (physics), separation techniques (chemistry) and marine ecosystems (biology).

I think that today, more than ever, research in life sciences needs a strong ethical orientation. The enthusiasm of new discoveries and the possibilities that arise from them have a major impact that drives our expectations as scientists in never before seen areas of research and innovations. I agree with Dr. Macip, that “our only limit is our imagination”. For that reason I support his belief that society has to engage science.
I strongly believe that Biology teachers should keep up with all new discoveries in this area of science and should feel obliged to keep their students aware of the critical discoveries and applications that are emerging for the society. Prompted by the school curriculum in Biology we have plenty opportunities to discuss with our students on the outcome of research and its possible benefits for the society from the point of view of the end user or relating it to the possibilities that are offered for work in the area of science industry.
Last week, motivated by the cloning of primates that was recently announced by the scientific community, I had a very long discussion with my students on whether we should clone humans or not. It was a very interesting event in the class. Students were very active participants, seeking for more information in order to build their own perspective and format their point of view. However, due to the curriculum, I do not have the freedom to extend such activities within the strict school timetable. Taking also in mind the unbelievable speed of new information flow, I think that we need a brand new perspective on how to teach and support life sciences curriculum so as to motivate our students in engaging to modern research and innovation activities and applications. Informed and engaged students are more likely to support and reconstruct, as active citizens of tomorrow, the ethical frame and the orientation in research and innovation.

Until recently, computing was programmable and based around human-defined inputs. Cognitive systems learn with experience. They interact with humans naturally to interpret data, learning from virtually every interaction and proposing new possibilities through reasoning, to support human decision making. In the previous example, the cognitive system is pulling together not only disparate sources of information about the student, but also patterns learned from interactions with other students and the outcomes of their experiences. This amalgamation of information from experiential sources and interactions helps in making the optimal recommendation for the particular situation—a recommendation to the teacher, who can decide whether or not to follow it.

As we are talking about sharing responsibilities, we should include new discoveries in the textbooks/ curriculum(middle school onwards) and have a forum where children can share their ideas / queries about those. This will also help reduce the gaps between education and R&I. In the forum children and school educators can also share ideas of innovation and research. Afterall, we are talking about inclusiveness- right?
