ITHS 2026 Interdisciplinary Partnership Workshop by Amaya Gatling

To assist investigators in identifying partners for the collaborative Interdisciplinary Solution Development pilot award, ITHS is hosting a WWAMI-wide workshop, recruiting participants from business, policy, education, informatics, and related colleges at our regional institutions alongside clinical and translational science researchers. We are particularly interested in projects that focus on: fabrication methodologies, operational efficiency in clinical and translational research, surge capacity for clinical trials, integration of project management, incentives for health improvements, collaborative structures, and IP management.

Every day, patients fail to receive care that research has demonstrated to be effective. Turning a evidence-informed clinical practice guideline into routine care requires change throughout the healthcare system, including quality metrics, coverage policies, provider training, and patient education. The organizations providing these products are each making changes — but without coordination. Due to this lack of coordination, the system remains incomplete. Disconnects occur because there is no setting where the organizations align their work. The result: innovations that cannot be implemented because the system to support them has not been built.

We have formed a coalition with the mission to advance health and well-being by accelerating the implementation of evidence-informed oral health guidelines. By forming a coalition, we expect that efforts to make changes will become coordinated, leading to the implementation of evidence-informed innovations that previously were not able to be implemented. Thus, patients will receive higher quality oral healthcare and disparities will be reduced. We expect the coalition will have a national impact on oral health. In addition, this coalition could serve as a model for other domains in healthcare, enabling patients to receive evidence-informed whole person healthcare.

We initiated a penicillin allergy evaluation pilot for BMT candidates in 2/2026. The rate limiting step for allergy evaluation prior to transplant has been the availability of Allergy specialists. The evidence supports that evaluation and delabeling can be done by other specialties for low risk patients and our pilot triages some of these evaluations to the ID clinic instead of Allergy. We have been successful in increasing delabeling prior to transplant but are currently relying on an RN telephone call to triage patients. We think a patient-led screening would be both more patient-centered and efficient.
