In Piaget's Theory, the middle to late childhood is the concrete operational stage (7-11 years). During this stage, the third stage, children begin to develop the ability to think more logically. They develop a reduction in their egocentrism views. They begin to understand hypothetical situations. Gain the ability to reverse things mentally such as 4+2=6 then 6-2=4. They begin to improve classification skills. They are also able to consider the needs of others.

In Hey Arnold!, Arnold and his cohorts often found themselves in real life situations that called on them to use their newly acquired developmental skills such as making moral decisions, solving conflict, understanding the importance of being able to put themselves in another persons shoes. They dealt with several emotions like fear, love, empathy and sadness. His friendships gave him the opportunity to learn social skills.

Helga Petaki is a frightening friend who believed she was in love with Arnold. She had a secret crush on him. Unable to show her true feelings, she was also a bully towards him. There are multiple scenes showing Arnold running away from Helga to avoid her torment of him. During this stage of development, it is normal for children to show interest in the opposite sex as they near puberty.
