I thought it was interesting how Miss Gates had her students bring in modern events happening around them. Most teachers, at least back then, only taught the basics, not really modern events, at least that's what I think. She makes the children think about how they can impact their lives right now, and I think that is a very important thing to learn in that time period, especially with what has been happening in their town.

On page 326 it reminded me of that, scout says "there was one odd thing I ever understood: in spite of Atticus's shortcomings as a parent, people were content to re-elect him to the state legislature that year..." I think that it shows that her vocabulary his much larger than the average 3rd grader at the time.

I think it is interesting that Atticus said that Mr Underwood hated blacks, but in his paper he still said it was a sin to kill a cripple even though the cripple he was talking about was a black man. And Scout realised that when he called Tom's death senseless slaughter, he meant that even though Atticus had proved that Tom was innocent, he really had no case and because he was black. Even though Mr Underwood hates blacks, he was able to see this and wasn't afraid to say it.
