"'She was. She had her own views about things, a lot different from mine, maybe ... Son, I told you that if you hadn't lost your head I'd have made you go read to her. I wanted you to see something about her - I wanted you to see what what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win but sometimes you do. Mrs. Dubose won, all ninety-eight pounds of her. According to her views she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew.'" (116)
I chose this quote to support the claim because it shows how Atticus was trying to show his son the correct thing to do despite what you feel the right thing to do at the time and to stand by his ground.

"'When summer comes you'll have to keep your head about far worse things . . . it's not fair for you and Jem, I know that, but sometimes we have to make the best of things, and the way we conduct ourselves when the chips are down- well you'll look back on this with some compassion and some feeling that I didn't let you down"
This quote shows how Atticus is giving advice to his children Jem and Scout about keeping their head up through difficult stuff that might come in the future. This quote also shows how Atticus tells Jem and Scout to stay strong during the case of Tom Robinson and how there might be other people saying stuff about Tom maybe like rude comments that can affect them.

I strongly advise you to go down and have a talk with Mrs. Dubose," said Atticus. "Come straight home afterward."
Jem did not move.
"Go on, I said."
I followed Jem out of the livingroom. "Come back here," Atticus said to me. I came back. ( Pg.104)
The reason that this supports the claim is that here Atticus is telling Jem what to do and guiding him to what his actions are.

"Then you'll do it for a month"(105).This line is evidence that Atticus is a guide for his children because Atticus is basically telling Jem he should be able to keep the promises he makes. So Jem later on in the book keeps his promise and reads the book to Mrs.Dubose.

"Yes, sir. She wants me to come every afternoon after school and Saturdays and read to her out loud for two hours. Atticus do I have to?" "Certainly" (105). This piece of the text relates to the main idea because Atticus here is making Jem stop being selfish and read to Mrs. Dubose's house and read for two hours every day after school. She is now entitled to read to Mrs. Dubose because Mrs. Dubouse wanted her too.

Whatever she says to you, it's your job not to let her make you mad¨ (100). This quote is about Atticus talking to Jem about Mrs. Dubose. Atticus wanted Jem to treat Mrs.Dubose with manners and to not do anything that can make her mad. He is teaching Jem how to treat Mrs. Dubose (someone older than him) because he shouldn't be treating her with no respect.
