The text being unreliable is important for how much of it is real or literal. Look at the narrator in The Tell Tale Heart. He is clearly insane. Most of the events did not happen. We thus interpret the story differently. The floorboards did not literally groan and shift, but is shows how the narrator feels about the crime in which he has committed. It takes us on a journey with him, about how he views the world in this state. He says he feels the police officers are taunting him, when in fact it was a normal conversation. He would have gotten away with out, if not for his confession. However, this helps thematically. We can say that the guilt weighed upon him was too much, and we can point to that as a theme. Something along the lines of 'Crimes remain upon the conscious despite their feelings prior.' Narrators can do a lot for theme, for instance Holden's gripes with the adult world. A different person might not care, and we would get a different store entirely. If something bad happens they might say "The world is a unforgiving place" or "I messed up." Holden is more likely to blame shift or say something like "This is why everyone is fake, this should not have happened. I don't know at this point, words have just appeared on my padlet

I think many people, and many characters, want to believe something about the world. Holden wants to believe that he isn't all screw up like the world seems to believe, and he'll do anything to try and make you believe that he's not half bad. This impacts the story because with nearly every negative encounter with someone else Holden becomes defensive and tries to blame anyone but himself, since he can't live with himself.

Determining whether a character is reliable o unreliable is important in deterring theme as it can help express a conflict or miscommunication that the characters must overcome. In "This Is How You Lose The Time War", the character's letters are written from their perspectives as they pass through time and inter dimensional space. While they are not intentionally unreliable, they come from cultures and societies that make it difficult for them to accurately describe their interactions. The author is able to draw a theme that people can establish connections despite this ignorance and that they are more than their flawed perspectives.

I think it's important to evaluate whether or not the narrator is reliable if the narrator is not reliable you can assume that the thematic meaning doesn't come from the plot. You have very little way of knowing what's accurate and what's not so the meaning comes from what is going on internally with the character. when a narrator is unreliable it forces you to read between the lines and draw your own conclusions and form your own opinions on the text.

The mind of a character is his own and we really can never predict what his emotions are guiding him to do in a situation. We can only predict what he'll do based on the past. The narrative voice may be what he's projecting on others but could be completely different than what he really is. It effects literary meaning because we don't know what he really wants.

When a narrator believes their self-truth so heavily and is unwilling to veer away from that belief then that is when the reader starts seeing the aspects of an unreliable narrator shine through. The meaning is forever altered from the self-truth of the narrator leaving the reader with questions of what was real and what was the narrator's self-truth.

It is very important to know whether a text is reliable or unreliable as knowing will make you determine whether you should trust what the narrator says or not, this changes the thematic meaning because events in the story are changed if the narrator is unreliable and cannot be trusted. Through what the narrator says you would have to make your own analysis or conclusion to what is happening if the narrator is lying, and therefore the theme would have to accommodate.

Narrative voice, especially in first person, needs to be identified as either reliable or unreliable. Without this identification, it's easy to believe everything said at face value. If they are reliable, it is okay to do this again. From there, you can understand the theme of the story. However, if it's an unreliable narrator, it's important to differentiate between how they view something and how it actually should be viewed as. Often times the theme can be mixed up if this crucial detail is forgotten about.

This is important because the narrator is who we see the story through. If they are unreliable we have to alter our thoughts on what the situation may really be which changes a lot of how the story can be viewed by the reader. This relates to theme because if the narrator is not reliable then the interpreted theme can be false.

The unreliable narrator may make it more difficult to understand thematic meaning because it is clouded by indifferent personality traits, but having a reliable narrator can portray exactly what the author may be trying to say.

For example if a story is told by an unreliable character then readers must read between the lines and look for clues or instances of what is truly happening and the meaning behind it.

It is important to evaluate a narrative voice in a work of literature as either Reliable or Unreliable in terms of thematic meaning for many reasons. One is that it helps the reader decide wether they should trust the narrator or not. If a narrator is reliable than the reader can trust what they say/think, while if a narrator was unreliable, the reader would not trust what they say/think. in terms of thematic meaning a reliable narrator will allow the reader to almost immediately understand the theme as they straight forward and truthful. On the other hand, an unreliable narrator would not allow the reader to know the theme right away and may not until the end of the story as they are misleading and all over the place.

A narrator's "self truth" can alter the understanding the reader has of a situation. In Catcher in the Rye, Holden doesn't hold himself accountable very often, and therefore he doesn't see himself as guilty. In reality, he is the one who is guilty and sometimes the reader is unable to interpret when the narrator is actually guilty or not. This could possibly lead to one of the characters being mistaken as an antagonist when they didn't do anything wrong.
