The Skin and Mucous Membranes both serve as the primary defense for the body, preventing infection and other pathogens from entering the body through the pores present on the surface. These pores are connected to sweat and sebaceous glands that secrete sweat and sebum (oil) respectively, which keep the ph level slightly lower than normal. By having the ph level at that certain level, it acts as an inhibitor that prevents the growth of certain bacteria. Furthermore, regardless of the protection the skin and mucous membranes give the human body, there are openings spread throughout the body that allow pathogens, bacteria, and viruses to enter and terrorize the different systems and cells of the body.

The non-specific immunity, otherwise known as the innate immunity, focuses on protecting the body from foreign entities such as bacteria, pathogens and viruses. As stated in the name, non-specific immunity is composed of the body’s natural defenses, these natural defenses are not only limited to the skin, nose hair, stomach acid and so on. Going into the cellular level, there are T-cells called “natural killer T-cells”, these T-cells attack cells and entities that are not native to the host’s body By releasing chemicals that break them down.

Otherwise known as adaptive immunity, there is the presence of T-cells with the addition of B-cells and helper T-cells. When pathogens enter the body and are spotted by macrophages, T and B cells are then alerted and travel to the location to eliminate the threat. These T and B cells contain specific antibodies that counteract the antigens present on the pathogen. After eliminating the threat, memory T-cells come into play; their job here is to create a long-term record of the recent threats through the antigens they possess, in doing so the immune system of the host would be able to rapidly respond to the same threat in the future.

Otherwise known as human immunodeficiency virus, it is a retrovirus that is commonly known for it being a sexually transmitted disease; it can be transmitted through other means such as blood via sharing needles. What makes this virus deadly is that it attacks and infects helper T-cells which prevents B cells from producing antibodies to counteract it. Due to this, it can cause a loss of the ability to produce antibodies to fight against different pathogens.
