I chose this book because it seemed interesting and I wanted to see what would happen to someone who had to go through that. The story focuses on Howard Dully. He is wild, doesn’t follow the rules, always getting in trouble, sneaky, and one of four sons.

The story takes place on November 30, 1948 when Howard was born, he lived in Los Altos and it does span over a long period of time. And he died on February 11th 2025. The time period affected how people act towards Howard. It made them think that he needed to be “fixed” even though he was just a little bit more wild than other kids. The main action of the story took place in a lot of different places like his house, Dr. Freeman‘s office, and Juvie these places affected how people acted like how his home was abusive and Juvie turned Howard into a completely different person.

Authors Purpose

The message he’s trying to give the audience is that it’s never too late to turn your life around. He’s trying to tell us the story of his life, but also tell us it’s never too late to change the outcome of your life. I know this because he was in his mid- 50s when he decided to start living a normal life I think his personal life impacted him writing this book since it was his life story.

Ethos: He used the documents from his meeting with doctor freeman to see what Lou (his stepmom) was really saying and getting firsthand information.

Pathos: He talked about how getting abused changed the way he is and how he was sad he was getting things done so late in life and he felt behind which made me sad

Logos: He used what he knew about himself as a child and used logic to realize he never did any rung wrong to deserve what happened to him

This song is about a lobotomy. It says in the lyrics he is dreaming of another place in time where his family is from, Howard would dream of a better or differnt family or imagine his home life differently. And it talks about the sad ending of a lobotomy which Howard did have.
