He was playing "medieval foot-ball" with his friends when he decided to just pick up the ball. Medieval foot-ball was a freeform game where the only goal was to get the ball across the enemy line. It was illegal to pick it up and run with it but it caught on quickly with everyone involved in the game and changed it completely.
