Tyler the Creators latest album, Flower Boy, debuted publicly on July 21, 2017—wedged in between various singles released before and after the albums release. This album starkly contrasts the violent and dirty language and style of Tyler’s past work, as this album focused on Tyler’s lyrical personal dialogue using flowery language and tranquil imagery. The album was created and produced by Tyler through Columbia Records, and received a range of reviews from both accredited critics and the general public, because his calm openness contrasts his spiteful, aggressive persona of his past albums, particularly his Goblin and Bastard eras.

I love this album. I personally believe that Tyler’s complexity in his music as well as his lyricism will revolutionize the world of rap—both in alternative and mainstream. I also believe that his homosexual dialogue will help to change the homophobia inherent in the rap community. This is not only one of Tyler’s best works, but it is one of the best rap albums of 2017. Tyler is on his way to mainstream success as well as on his way to be a creative revolutionary, and I am excited to see where he will go.

Musically, Tyler’s signature synth-rap sound is again exemplified in this newer album, however as opposed to the dirty synth tracks used in his past albums, Tyler uses his signature style to create a dreamy, ethereal sound—which works as the perfect backdrop to the intimate thoughts shared in the lyrics. The album sounds timeless and momentary, as if we are gazing into Tyler’s internal emotions and reflections. In the song below, Tyler uses repetition and sadness in order to encapsulate his feelings.

"… Flower Boy captures Tyler at his least tormented and twisted; it is an album of exquisitely arranged, melodious synth-rap, wistful and reflective, heavy on the heavenly. It's not all dreamy—watch out for the occasional profane pothole—but largely this is the work of an evolved artist and mature person,"

Garden Shed

The release of Garden shed shocked the hip hop community and changed everyone’s perceived understanding of Tyler. As opposed to his past rhetoric regarding homosexuals, in which he often spoke negatively if not violently towards the LGBT community throughout his various albums, Garden shed works as an ode to Tyler’s inability to ignore his homosexual tendencies, and exemplifies the process of self-acceptance regarding his internal battle with homosexuality. In my opinion, this song transforms the purpose of all of Tyler’s work, because the song not only validates Tyler’s genuinity in Flower Boy, but it also changes the meaning of his past albums, as it shows Tyler’s ironic facades in his past albums that work to illustrate his own inner turmoil. Tyler uses quiet and silence in order to instill intimacy into the audience, through using a singular guitar in the beginning of the song. This allows the audience to feel as if they have reached Tyler’s innermost thoughts, and therefore validated the lyrics. Tyler also uses discrepancy in his guitar playing .
