The teacher in the blog mentions that the game is administered on the third day of school. That's a good idea because the students are still getting used to their new teacher. I think such an activity will work better for the younger grades.
JJ

It took awhile for me to locate the number 8. I was looking for a number with a much smaller font, but the number 8 has a regular-sized font. The reason I had a hard time finding it is because it was placed in the bottom row, which is an area I didn't bother to check until much later in the round.
JJ

For the 2nd round, we looked for each number in the next quadrant, clockwise from the previous one. This made it easier to find each one. But it was still challenging to spot the different sizes. Sometimes we would spot it quickly, and sometimes we still had to hunt around.
BC

Learning to Work as a Group?

I don't know if this would work to teach my students to work as a group? Many of them are very competitive, especially when doing math. They tend to see it as a race, and often boast about who finishes work first (regardless of whether they did it correctly or not.) The quantitative element of this game lends itself to that kind of thinking, and it could also intimidate those who do not get as far.
On the other hand, this could be a good vehicle for talking about the value of working together and sharing their thinking.
BC
