This book is written from the perspective of a girl who was adopted from Russia as she welcomes her new brother--also from Russia--into the family. Students will discuss the book's emphasis on the importance of teaching adopted children about their birth culture. Is it necessary? What might be the benefits? The drawbacks? The challenges? As an extension activity, students will be asked to bring in a recipe that represents their home cultures to be included in a class cookbook, and to describe in writing why they chose that recipe and what it represents to them.

Before beginning the unit on adoption, students will complete an anticipation guide to assess their assumptions and beliefs about adoption. One question on the anticipation guide asks students to complete the sentence: "Adoption is..." After reading this book, the teacher will draw students' attention to the fourth page: "[Adoption] is a special kind of love story. Your family needed and wanted a child to love and care for, and you needed a family to love and care for you." Students will discuss whether they feel this is an adequate description for adoption. Is this the whole story? How does it match up with their sentences from the anticipation guide? Does this statement give equal voice to all members of the adoption triad (adoptee, adoptive family, and birth family)? Did the students' responses privilege any of the members of the triad over others?
