If you are teaching in a context in which your students feel their home or heritage language and culture are “beneath” the L2languaculture, how would you approach those students in your classroom? How might you help them to better appreciate their heritage language and culture?

Making sure their culture is valued in my classroom. I can show value by asking meaningful questions and having "real world math problems" incorporated in my lessons. I can also make sure the holidays are put on my warm-up slide to show appreciation. Or have music that connects to their culture or interest or language for my do-now countdown.

We could use translanguaging approach for those students to help them make a balance in using 2 languages. Also, we can incorporate their home language in some teaching contexts to make them realize the linguistic values of their home language. Sometimes, we could give students a chance to share or compare the different linguistic features between L1 and L2

I would support my students' heritage with opportunities such as activities for students to learn about each other's culture. Students share their cultural backgrounds freely in the classroom. Students will give presentations about their country, its traditions, and how their language has evolved. Maybe their country has a mixture of cultural backgrounds.

I really do not have any recollection of having faced this particular situation in the classroom and have not really done much beyond trying to create a climate where students share experiences from home that have connections with content. If they share it allows them to develop a strong degree of comfort as a classroom community.

I would try to empower my students to embrace their linguistic and cultural identities. I would reiterate the benefits of bilingualism. I would incorporate their cultures and languages in class activities. I would encourage students to share personal stories linked to their L1. Creating an inclusive learning environment is key.

I think it would be important to reinforce the value of their culture to them. Maybe find a topic that they could teach about something unique that they can share from their own culture. I would think it would be important to highlight cool or important cultural contributions. I also think it would be interesting to maybe flip the script on some of your English L1 speakers and have them try to complete tasks using your EB speaker's home language.
