It may not be as popular as rap and pop, but it still holds a strong audience. I feel like its popular among teenagers because it’s different, it’s not music that you hear a lot of in the media. Rock music is edgy and different and usually has deep meaning. Rock music addresses important issues such as love, acceptance, depression, etc. that a teenager is often going through. Teenagers for example will listen to it, to escape reality and escape the hardships that come with finding out who you are and where you belong in this world. Teenagers are often a population that is misunderstood so listening to rock is a way for them to feel like they belong. Due to rock music’s electric guitar and drums it often attracts teenagers that are in that “forget the world and everyone” stage. A couple of rock songs include “Numb” by Linkin Park, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, etc. I have changed my mind on the genre because before I was so closeminded and thought that rock music didn’t have much of a meaning. However, after completing this report, it has made me realize that rock music can hold a lot of meaning. I always thought that sad and meaningful music had to be country music or classical music. For example, Linkin Park’s “Numb” has opened a lot of doors for me. It has gotten me intrigued to listen to more rock music. Rock music has a different way of expressing itself, it doesn’t show sad emotions through slow beats and tempos.
