Mahmoud’s obstacle that he is facing is that their boat got delayed to Turkey causing it to be harder for them to find a place to sleep. The person responsible for this is the man who promised them to take them on his boat. Isabel’s obstacle she is facing is that the tanker caused many waves causing Señor Castillo to fall in the water. The tanker was responsible for this.
3) Isabel and Mahmoud’s situations are similar at this point of the story because they both were on their way to go to another country but they faced problems causing them to get delayed. This makes him feel as if he can't escape them even when their in the middle of the ocean. He doesn't feel as happy or as safe on the ship as he was before now knowing that there are people against him on it.
2. Josef, Mahmoud and Isabel have all encountered hardships in this part of their journeys. Josef learned that there are Nazi's aboard the same ship as him and he no longer feels the same sense of joy he did before he learned this. Josef is now experiencing the same fear he felt when he lived in Germany. Mahmoud and his family are constantly being delayed each time they have to do something. They were unable to find a place to sleep since the hotel they were suppose to stay at was already full. They also learned that the boat they were suppose to take won't be leaving until the next day. Isabel and Ivan's family's boat was involved in a near-miss when a tanker was heading their way. Although the tanker didn't hit them, it sent off huge waves crashing on their boat and everyone fell to the floor of the boat, except for Senior Castillo who happened to fall off the boat. Isabel and Ivan who got up after the wave hit their boat, were unable to find Senior Castillo in the ocean water.

They are now in Turkey and sleeping in an abandoned mall waiting for a boat to take them to Germany. Isabels family is taking a boat from Cuba to get to the U.S because there is corruption and her family’s going bankrupt.
3)Mahmoud’s and Isabels situation are similar because they’re both leaving their country because of government corruption and both of their families are going bankrupt.

Question 3
Isabel and Mahmoud’s situations are similar at this point in the story because, they both were in the process of leaving their country, however both were faced with a conflict that prevented them from doing so. In Isabel’s situation, her conflict was the boat’s motor shutting down, and the tanker that caused the waves that swept Señor Castillo off the boat. In the boat, Isabel is facing different opinions from her family. Lito (Isabel’s Grandpa) doesn’t want to leave Cuba and he’s staying loyal but, Isabel feels like it’s something that needs to happen. If they don’t leave, her father will go to jail. Isabel’s boat keeps breaking down. The boat’s engine broke down. The boat also had a hole in it. They fixed the problems but more keep coming up. The only problem yet to be fixed is that Senõr Castillo disappeared in the waves. I think the problems keep happening because it wasn’t planned. Josef saw anti Jewish people in the lower deck and that’s making him feel uncomfortable. The people responsible for it are the anti Jewish people. Mahmoud and his family’s ship got delayed despite having a smuggler telling them that he’ll help them. I think it’s the smuggler’s fault.

Josef's family had to leave Germany because his family wasn't welcomed in Germany anymore due to his father practicing law while being Jewish, and Jews weren't allowed to practice law in Germany.His family left Germany on boat to go to Cuba, where he learned on the lower deck the Nazis were still there.
