It is vital all staff in school understand the importance of a relational approach and know how to help care experienced children thrive in school. These children have enough challenges in their lives without school being difficult too.

With 12 years personal experience of fighting for my daughters complex trauma needs to be understood, it is clear that even now, in SEND settings the impact of her complex trauma is little understood. As a professional with 25 years of SEND experience as well as 12 years lived complex trauma experiences, I can now support other education professionals to understand young peoples complex challenges in the classroom. However the funding and commitment to do this is so limited, it is a significant struggle and each week I learn of more young people who are failed within education.

For so many adopted children and their families, school is a constant battle. High quality training is desperately needed.

As an adopter who couldn’t find the right school for my son to understand the impact of trauma and loss I had to set one up myself. Too many adopted and looked after children are failing at school due to lack of understanding by teachers.
