She never lived to know her father. He passed away when she was only 2 months old. Sara enjoyed a happy childhood raised by her mother. They identified as 100% Greek but they also celebrated being Jewish. They did this by lighting candles every Friday and attending temple on holidays. She knew she had to leave her home town when the Germans came in 1941. She heard stories about Jews being deported by the Nazis from their hometown and never returning. Sara and her mother escaped and hid in a small village of Kuturla.

She formed a band of female partisans that became indispensable to the male fighters, turning young girls into women. They were ordered to throw Molotov cocktails to distract the enemy and allowed the partisans to attack on their first day. The males were impressed by their skills and invited the all-female group to join in on many missions. They burned down houses, executed Nazi collaborstors, and aided the men in a way no group of females had before. The male andartes were given credit for  many of the missions the women completed, as it was unfathomable the women could accomplish such acts. Frequently the women for forced to sleep next to the men and Sara constantly worried about the women's safety.

By the time she was 18 years old she was known as ‘Kapetenissa [Captain] Sarika’. The Nazis sent an informer to try to capure her but mistakenly arrested, then brutally raped and murdered her cousin Medi. To get revenge she tracked down and executed the informer.

Sara was arrested, but due to a great reputation, she was released shortly after. She then migrated to Israel where she settled and met her husband.
