Book Box by Ava Schram

This book box was made for Rosie. Rosie is six years old and is in the first grade. Rosie is a CODA, (child of a deaf adult) so she doesn't have a ton of experience being read to as a child, although she doesn't have this experience she is extremely intelligent and very good at math. She is reading at a second grade level and is very interested in dance, all types of animals, and learning more about asl so she can help her parents!

I chose Hands & Hearts for Rosies book box because it involves a lot of sign and teaches new words in ASL. It is a bit of an easier read for her so she will finish it quickly, but it will give her the opportunity to have a book she can relate to her home life and show what different families who sign can look like. This book will be a mirror for Rosie, it will help her learn more about a subject that she specifically is familiar with. She also relates to this book because it shows the relationship of a deaf mother and her young daughter. The book includes fun sidebars that help give insight about the text and about the signs that are included, which I think we be extremely beneficial to Rosie!

Dancing in the Wings

Dancing in the wings fits Rosies interest perfectly. This book is about a young dancer who has a chance to make her dreams come true when a famous director comes to see her class. This book is all around inclusive, it includes diverse characters, body positivity, and shows how to have confidence in yourself and what you believe in. This book will be both a window and a mirror for Rosie. She relates because she is a dancer and loves to dance, but it also gives her the chance to view dance from another perspective than her own. This is perfectly at Rosies reading level and fits her interests, so I believe it will be a perfect fit for her!

Old Enough to Save the Planet

This book is perfect for Rosie, Old Enough to Save the Planet is a first to second grade reading level book, that focuses on what is happening around our planet, and what children are doing to help. Rosie is very interested in animals and this book will not only help her learn about animals, but also bigger issues on our planet. It teaches children about the dangers of climate change and how our world is changing due to our actions. It also educates children on what they can do in their own communities to help prevent climate change and make the world a better place. On top of this Old Enough to Save the World won a total book award, this award shows how this book has a very big impact on children through the story and the images. I am hoping that Rosie will be a mirror for Rosie, it will show her what she can do to help in her community. Most young children don't know about climate change and the issues going on around our world. Although this story obviously doesn't go into detail about the realities of what is happening, it will give a grasp on how children can help their communities and our planet. I believe that Rosie will be very interested in this book, and it will not only show some of her interests, but also help her to indulge in our planets and ecosystems.

The One and Only Ivan

This book would definitely be a challenge book for Rosie, as it is closer to a third grade level. The One and Only Ivan is a book about a gorilla who has been stuck in a cage in a shopping mall his whole life, he doesn't know what the jungle is like at all. Eventually a new friend joins him and opens his eyes. This book is both a NY Times #1 best seller and also a Newbery award winning novel. Although it is a bit of a longer read, and will take Rosie quite a while to read, I think she will be very interested in the story. She loves all sorts of animals so I think she would be very engaged and interested this book. It would be a window for Rosie, as it would show the life of a caged animal and would hopefully change her perspective on animals who live in cages and zoos.

Jewel Kingdom; The Ruby Princess Runs Away

Jewel Kingdom seems like a perfect book match for Rosie. The Ruby Princess Runs Away follows a girl who is supposed to take over her kingdom and runs away, before she gets far she gets news that someone is trying to take over the jewel kingdom and she has to save it. This book follows a series as well with a different princess as the main character in each. This series shows girls form different culture as they work together to save their kingdoms. These books will be a bit of a difficult read for Rosie as they are longer and they are a series, but I think they will be very captivating and that Rosie will be very interested in them. These books will be windows for Rosie, as they include fantasy and are completely fiction.

This Land: The History of the Land We're on

This Land is story that teaches about American Indians and the Indigenous peoples' who lived here before us. It is important for children to know about the history of where our land comes from and who it truly belongs to. There are many families who come before us and this story highlights different families and how they all used to live on this land. This book is a just right book for Rosie, it is right between a first and second grade reading level. It is a lengthier book but I don't think it will take her too long to read it. This book is a window for Rosie, it will let her see and learn about different cultures. I think that Rosie will be very interested in this book and I am hoping it will also make her question where she comes from and her heritage.
