The date is July 21, 1861. 35 thousand Union soldiers under the command of General McDowell were led to attack 20 thousand Confederate soldiers under the command of Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard at the Manassas Junction. The battle began with a artillery bombardment followed by a Union attack on the Confederate position. Gradually, the Union soldiers pushed the Confederate soldiers back but then Confederate soldiers saw Thomas Jonathan Jackson, a Confederate General, standing like a "Stone Wall" with his regiment. The Confederate troops regained morale and with more reinforcements they charged the Union line in a terrible, high pitched screech known as the "Rebel Yell." The Union line was shattered and trampled congress member's picnic baskets (Yes, members of congress thought it was an easy victory and had a picnic while young men slaughtered each other - really messed up). The South earned a victory, a yell, and Jackson owned his soon - famous name, "Stonewall" Jackson. On the other hand, the Union received a terrible defeat and four more years of fighting. This relates perfectly to the book because, well, Charlie was in the battle on the Union side and received a bad defeat, although his was a bit more dramatic. This happened with Charlie on page 90.

- Max Hilderbrand

In the video it shows what the needs of each side and what happened during the battle. The Confederate army wanted to take the war to the north and also needed supplies. The Union army chased the Confederate army while getting troops. The two sides met at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was a three day . The Union successfully held the hill that they were positioned on. The Confederates lost the battle and went back down to the south. They also lost the battle in Mississippi. This relates to the book because Charley was defending the hill against the Confederate charge "Pickett's Charge." He sliced people with his bayonet and sho many Confederate soldiers.
By Andrew Joe
