The novel investigates the well known Steven Avery trial that was documented in the Netflix show Making a Murderer through the eyes of criminal defense lawyer, and author of the book, Jerome F. Buting. This is reflective of the Steven Avery case as Steven Avery's nephew, Brendan Dassey, confessed to raping a woman along side Avery, however this confession has been proven false. Nancy talks about how one of the reasons that this happens is because when suspects are brought in for interrogation, rather than being questioned they are talked to in a very accusative tone. This relates to my anchor text because similar to Steven Avery, the woman being accused is being punished for something that is not true. During the Salem Witch Trials, many women of lower status were accused of being witches by people of higher status and without much evidence or search they were punished despite being innocent. This shows how there was bias in the trials and potentially may still be bias in trials that currently go on today. Many cases may have traces of misconduct that is being led by social status, money, or reputation. Monroe writes, "You see: whoever said he heard them, he has lied. And yet word are left dark like heavy dust" implying that anyone who claims they have heard the whispers or rumors was making up a rumor of their own and that their words would leave an imprint that would spread around like dust and would be believed as if it was a hard fact. In the final line, he writes, "Today my name: tomorrow they'll find yours." By this line, I think Monro is claiming that society has built his reputation for him and tomorrow the rumors will build a reputation for someone else, despite them being lies they will be believed and they will leave a dark stain. Steven Avery, despite being exonerated, still had a bad reputation to his name and because he was claimed guilty and then proven innocent after there was damage left on his name and many of his relationships were broken off. For some background, Amber Heard had accused Johnny Depp of domestic violence however, Johnny Depp countered this accusation by stating that Amber Heard was in fact the abuser in their relationship. He proceeded to sue her for defamation. After the accusations were made and before anything was proven true or false, Johnny Depp faced a major loss, he lost many friends, fans, supporters, and even jobs. However, when he accused Amber Heard of lying about these accusations, Amber Heard had suffered significantly less consequences and was still actively working on many jobs until much later in the case when evidence was involved. Although nothing has been confirmed and the case is still on going, both actors suffered consequences due to these words despite neither of them yet being proven guilty. Defamation is the wrongful accusation or spreading of false rumors about someone in front of a third party to purposefully harm their image or reputation.
