Favorite Characteristic

When defining my favorite characteristic, I chose "helpful". I chose this because I have always been told I am helpful and even have recognized in my life that I try to my best to help others and make sure everyone is happy and getting to where they need to go. This characteristic is also why I chose to be a teacher. As long as I can remember I was always happiest when helping others to understand things they might have trouble, whether that be on a topic in school or when serving at a restaurant and helping to train my coworkers. Whenever I work with my students and help them to better comprehend something through a strategy, I get this sort of excitement for them that they are able to master something new. Especially with kids, there is a light in their eyes when they finally understand something they have spent so much time struggling with. I feel that identifying one’s characteristic is a strong asset to building their identity because it brings a positive reflection on not only their self-esteem but on their self-reflection.

The object that is most important to me is my Engagement ring. This represents my future and how I will change as an individual and grow. With this ring it represents the blending of my family with my fiancé’s and shows how my cultural identity will grow as well. The story behind this object is that my fiancé had picked out the ring all by himself, without any suggestions from me. But he was still able to find a ring that would best represent our bond. When he went to get the ring, the jeweler informed him that the three stones were symbols for the past, future, and the present. And he felt that that was the best way to symbolize our relationship.

When looking back on my experiences in life, I could not really recall a specific moment when I spoke out or stood up for something. I was always one to stand down and not speak up for the reason listed in the video. But through my college courses and life experiences, I have gained a new outlook on life. So now I feel more confident and empowered to speak up and stand up for things. And I drew this image because it shows a woman breaking free from the ball that was weighing her down. Now she (I) can become more independent and feel free of the things that were weighing us down.

In my recent field placement, I was working with a student that was placed as an EL student. But when I went to work with the student using Spanish translation, the student informed me that they did not understand the written Spanish language.
After talking with my Mentor teacher, we found out that the student was misdiagnosed as an EL because of their ethnicity and was not given the proper strategies to be successful. They slipped through the cracks and were diagnosed as an EL student and not given the proper kid talk or put on the proper plan to reach proficiency.

For this, I drew an image of a student being tied up by the red tape created by the public school system and the file categorization system that is used to help these students but ends up doing them a disservice instead because of the red tape of a lengthy process and other obstacles. I felt this was a very strong thing for me to work on because it helped me to recognize the importance of actually understanding a student as an individual and not just another number.

When I think of an experience that brought discomfort and fear, I think of all the duties of a teacher. When going through the program, it was almost a culture shock of how much is not said about what it really takes to be a teacher. I drew an image of a woman juggling the multiple duties of a teacher, which all teachers that I have seen in the field do so effortlessly. I hope through the right time management and programs I will be able to do the same.

For me identifying my literacy practice of everyday life, I had taken a screenshot of my phone with all the apps that I tend to use on a daily to weekly basis. Whenever I use these apps I am partaking in literacy from writing a paper on google docs to writing an email to a professor to even posting to social media. It is good to identify literacy in everyday life, because to show the importance of literacy and how it can be used in everyday life even it is not the normal academic kind as writing or reading.

On top of the river it represents all my favorite books I read before I was a legal adult, and below the river it shows all the most recent favorite literacy experiences. Overall I think my favorite literacy experience is with reading chapter books, which is what i would love to get back into once I graduate.
When creating this image there was a method to my colors in the pictures above the river. As the images go down the river they get darker. Personally in my experiences with book, the book that we read when we were younger were more colorful, where as the books we read when we got high school got darker, in their content. Also, the things below the river were the more recent forms of my literacy experiences: apps and text books. Whether those applications be accessed through the smartphone or the computer, they are a big form of literacy.

For my favorite literature experience, in relation to an important book, I chose The Giving Tree. This book was one of my favorites growing up, as well as one of my mom’s favorites. Growing up I would always beg my mom to read this book to me, and I hope to carry on the generation book to my kids as well someday. This book is why I also try to cherish others and not take things for granted because the tree would always give as much as he could to the boy and then the boy regretted taking the tree for granted.

I close the poem with the words “I am a teacher” because all of these things make me a better teacher. The importance of defining one cultural identity helps you to better understand your students and help them feel closer to you so they feel safe. When identifying my literacy identity and literacy need, helped me to better understand the importance to build on the student's love and understanding of their literacy development. So they might one-day love literacy as much as I do. All of these things make me a better individual as well as a better teacher for my students.
