If people started to believe Betty. I would have told someone before. It was a risk but I wonder what will happen next.

This suprises me that Annabelle´s family cared about finding Betty. They are looking for her and talking with Constable Oleska. Even Annabelle is asking if they have found them yet. Which Betty had done so much to harm her family anf her it seems like she would not care. Maybe Annabelle does not care that much but is just curious. Or she wants to say something to her.

I can't believe that Betty has disappeared. Taking into account that Betty is the main antagonist in the story and the story is just getting to the end of the rising action, I find it odd that the author has removed Betty out of the equation for a little while, at least. Personally, I believe that this entire thing is an elaborate plot by Betty and probably Andy as well to frame Toby for Betty's "disappearance" and, therefore, the other recent crimes. There is also the possibility that Toby was actually behind Betty's disappearance, but I find that unlikely as nothing that Toby has done so far indicates him being able to kidnap a child. In any case, I think that Betty will return before the end of the book, as it would be strange (yet interesting) if there were no conventional climax or face-off with the antagonist near the end of the book.

I think that it's great that Annabelle is taking Toby in and giving him a place to stay. I am so proud of Annabelle for doing this, as she is taking a big risk in taking in a wanted man. She does it regardless because she knows that Toby is innocent and that this whole situation is a big misunderstanding. This tells us that Annabelle is a kindhearted and caring person, as she knows that Toby needs a place to stay hidden and wants to protect him. Not many people would take this big a risk, but Annabelle knows that it is the right thing to do for an innocent man. This entire situation kind of reminds me of movies like Lilo and Stitch and E.T. a little bit, as in all of these, the protagonist is protecting a misunderstood yet kind creature/person by sheltering them in their own house. I think that people will eventually find Toby, however, and this will be the climax of the book, the fact that Toby is being taken away and Annabelle has to help him in some way.

It seems very strange to me that Toby, this stoic and rough person, is afraid of heights. This might be because of something that happened during the war. Maybe Toby and the Americans were attacked on a hill or a high place, and this is why Toby seems very hesitant to go up a few feet on a ladder.

The way the author has Toby describe the war is just heart-wrenching, sad, and really impacts readers. Firstly, the imagery used here is amazing. The author uses multiple senses to describe the scene. From the taste of blood and dirt to the sounds of cannons and gunfire, the reader feels like they are placed within the scene, and that makes the horror of the war that much more intense. Furthermore, by really explaining what is going on in Toby's head while this is all happening, like Toby's constant fear and his wishes to die at certain points because of how rough times are, the reader can understand why Toby is the way he is today and just how much he was psychologically affected by the war. If I had to hear people screaming as they died and had to murder as many soldiers as Toby did, I definitely would be like Toby, sad, introverted, and a shadow of my former self. One line that particularly stuck out to me was, "How a man bellows, cow-like, as he is cut to pieces. How another man whistles like a train" (Wolk 175). When I read this, I was truly horrified and an awful picture came into my mind, which just shows how brilliant the author's use of imagery is here.

So it turns out that my theory was right, and Betty was the one who threw the rock with Andy's help. Knowing Betty, this is honestly not surprising. I still wonder who she was aiming at, though. I don't think she was aiming for Ruth because Betty turned away, almost as if she was a bit guilty, when Annabelle reminded her that Ruth lost her eye earlier. This shows that Betty probably wasn't intending to hurt Ruth, as she had no clear motive. That just leaves Mr. Ansel and Annabelle. Betty could have been aiming at either one of them, as perhaps she wanted to keep hurting Annabelle, but she also mentioned earlier that she disliked Mr. Ansel and all Germans because they were "bullies." We also know that her grandparents also don't like Mr. Ansel because her great uncle was killed in the first war, which might be why Betty would want to hurt Mr. Ansel.

I wonder what this "whisper" Annabelle is talking about is. Maybe it has something to do with Betty's disappearance and where she is now, as Annabelle says she felt this whisper right after the trooper listed some places Betty could be where. This doesn't make much sense, though, as Annabelle wasn't actually involved with Betty's disappearance and did not do anything to her, so how could this whisper be coming from her memory. In any case, I believe that this small detail will be important later on in the story and could even be the key to finding Betty.

The author does a great job of describing Officer Coleman in great detail. I can really visualize everything about him, from his uniform to his face. I believe that the author included specific details about Coleman to contrast him from Constable Oleska and show readers that he is more serious/important than the Constable. Based on the ornate gun he carries, the fact that he was not in the woods with everyone else actively looking for Betty, and his outfit, I can infer that the Officer is probably not as interested in running around in the woods as he is in looking like the hero. Constable Oleska, on the other hand, doesn't have a fancy outfit or gun and cares about the people he is protecting and knows every one of them like family. This contrasts with the seriousness of Officer Coleman and how fancy his outfit is. I believe that this officer will play an important role in the story moving forward, probably as the person who captures Toby and takes him away from Annabelle. Why else would the author devote 1/2 a page to just describing Coleman?

She also believes that Toby didn't do anything to Betty and was just trying to protect Annabelle and Ruth. Unlike the constable and Aunt Lily, Annabelle wants to prove to everyone that Toby is a good guy and wouldn't harm anyone.

He has been through it all ups and downs and he is just trying but people do not appreciate him. The definition of these two pages is depressing.

I also like how Toby faced his fear and went down, even though he was afraid.
