In the beginning, Janie was married to Logan and then Joe, who controlled her to the point where she wasn't happy with her life. Her grandmother, Nanny, told her what to do as well. In the middle of the novel, Janie finally realized that she needed to live a life that she wanted. She didn't want to constantly take orders anymore. After Joe passed away and she married Tea Cake, who loved her for who she was, she seemed to be the happiest she'd ever been. This was one part of the novel where she had the most voice. When the hurricane happened, Tea Cake caught a disease that consumed his entire state of mind. He was very hostile and slightly abusive towards Janie. Janie realized that she couldn't let Tea Cake live like he was anymore. She took it upon herself to kill Tea Cake, because he was not the Tea Cake that she knew and loved anymore. This is very similar to Willy Loman in Death of A Salesman.  Willy was not himself anymore, and he knew that he was disappointing his family. This was evident when Linda, his wife, said "He's not the finest character that ever lived. But he's a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him. So attention must be paid." He killed himself so his wife and children would not suffer because of him anymore. In conclusion, Janie gained her voice when she married Tea Cake, because he was not controlling her nearly as much as her two previous husbands.
