For a long time I felt that because I am not a person of colour, it was not my place to comment on what people in BAME communities need or should do - and this is correct!
However what I had wrong was the idea that this means that it is not my place to talk about race.
Also, if I'm being honest, 'not my place to talk about it' is the nice, kind excuse I gave myself, covering up the harder ones, 'I'm afraid of doing something wrong and being embarrassed/disliked', 'I don't want to have difficult or upsetting conversations', 'I don't want to call out people I care about or have to be around', 'I feel ashamed of my privilege and unconscious bias', and 'I would never abuse or deliberately discriminate against someone, so I cannot be a racist... can I?'

"While we who are white tend to be fragile, in that it doesn’t take much to upset us around race, the impact of our response is not fragile at all" - Robin DiAngelo.

It is white people's responsibility, if we truly want to be anti-racist, to face the uncomfortable feelings and shame, and get past them to something useful and active. It is not people of colour's responsibility to forgive us or educate us. We shouldn't speak for others' culture or presume what others need. We should listen, and we should look deeply at ourselves, our own culture, how we have benefitted from discrimination, a racist system, and our own biases, and what we need to change.
