I would personally introduce a caveat on statues in public places, that they are celebrated for a set period and given the same amount of pomp and ceremony for their assembly as for their dismantling.  How long does a person of significance really need to be in the public consciousness two, three, five generations?   Or would it be more respectful to set a criterion, that after 50 years from that individual’s death, their effigy is taken down.

The source for this is a line from The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction by Ursula K. Le Guin where she refers to ‘the bag of stars’. I interpreted this as the creative spark within me – the power of my imagination - which I can release into the world.

The work is simply a depiction of a bag of stars, with the contents – the precious stars - starting to permeate the world beyond the interior. 

I restricted the materials to just strongly contrasting dark sugar paper and bright white chalk pen as these convey the binary nature of night versus day and interior versus exterior.

I’ve always been a keen observer – of the natural world, of the people around me, of any environment I pass through, of my own thoughts…. 

This habit is key to me as an artist. 

It provides the source of my art. 

Inspired by my friends clothing brand BetterListenNow (@bln.2022 on instagram), I made this video to explore both stop motion and animation using ‘stop motion app’, ‘iMovie’ and ‘Procreate’. 

The short film is just a bit of fun, I decided to have the two devils dancing and doing a ritual as the background was surreal and It kept me 
entertained through the many hours it took me to make this. Enjoy :)

The language I have invented has no sound. It only exists as characters. I like how the English written language is a reflection of the spoken language but the relationship between the written and spoken language in traditional Chinese has always confused me. I chose not to use an alphabet as I feel that characters based on simplified images are a much easier way to directly communicate a meaning (rather than in English where we only know the meaning of a word through context). Instead of using the space between characters/ words to show what was a phrase, I decided to underline characters which worked together to create a new meaning ( this was inspired by the use of hyphens in English punctuation and the method of using multiple characters to convey one concept)

If I’d had more time between and after my lectures, I would’ve liked to have considered how cultural values impact a language. 

I also would’ve drawn these characters using different tools and on different surfaces (for example scratched into dirt with a stick/ painted onto paper/edited in Adobe Illustrate to show how a language evolve/ is influence by how a society progresses.

This piece was inspired by ‘Forget Alpha and Beta’.

Initially I was thinking about exploring morse code or sound as form of an alphabet / language. During psychology we have been learning about neurotransmitters and how electrically charged impulses can essentially send instructions to our brain to affect our mood. 

This brought me on to think about how Mothers have that intuitive bond with their babies and after doing some research, I learnt that babies are able to communicate to their mothers through ‘bubble like structers’ called vesicles found in the placenta. 

Kafka’s work inspired me to look at objects in a different light. Instead of being tools or things that have concrete meaning; objects can be fluid. Ultimately an object’s value or use depends on the person that is perceiving it. 

My interpretation of Odradek, therefore, revolves around the idea that objects that are deemed no longer useful are usually discarded. I felt that in Kafka’s work, he played with the idea that they could actually be given new life and significance by the individual that interprets them. 

I collected various objects and bits that are on their own no longer useful; bits of string, dead batteries, wire from an old sketchbook spine, broken jewelry, etc and I decided to give them new life. But what could make these objects important again?

Are they once again useful if they represent a tool? A hammer, perhaps?
Are they significant if they are anthropomorphised? A pareidolia?

Or could I embrace the nonsensical nature of the objects together, creating something entirely new?

I made an abstract background of pink and black and drew a mandala pattern over the top. My mandala is a repeated pattern that incorporates the moon and the sun. This, along with the pink and black background, is to represent the harmony between the feminine and masculine that yoga brings. In the centre of the mandala is the sacred symbol of om. This is said to be the first sound of the universe and is perhaps the most well known symbol and sound in the yoga community.

If a star is wrapped up , does it still shine ? 

After doing this it made me wonder if smothering your children with love and constantly protecting them is the right thing to do. Not exposing children to the outside world and letting them think for themselves can make them unsure as an adult and overly emotional. 

Medium: tea-stained printed words, ink, thread, charity shop frame

A piece looking at the accumulation of (very working class, very english) childhood memories – the good, and the less so. In doing this I wrote a vague recollection of memories that stood out to me, before tea-staining them to both give that sense of nostalgia and to mimick the look of an old book. I then cut up each line and rearranged them, as to emulate how memories may become confused, blurred and less orderly with age, particularly if those memories have some negativity to them. The thread acts as some attempt to show how the mind tries to connect segments of memory, messily. I think it would be interesting to re-do this, but instead look at purely bad or good memories, and to black out the alternative; in turn, looking at the idea of subtraction, and how the mind may protect you from your own experiences.

I photographed myself in various positions in ‘bedroom city’. I wanted to explore this concept further by using my camera on shutter speed to capture each and every movement I made. 

The role of a women in the home is too clean , take care of children and to feed their husbands and children. The role of a man is to earn money , take care of ‘male duties’… so what if we revised these roles. This project took approximately 30 hours of labour ,done by a women. 

To be nude is to be seen naked by others and yet not recognised oneself. A naked body has to be seen as an object in order to become a nude.

I wanted to do a kind of “tarot cards” thing with this as each flower has a meaning in general and in Ophelia’s speech, giving kind of a “destiny” that is to be fulfilled by the person. I cut up paper into card size and did simple line art of the plants with parts of the speech at the bottom.
