Part 1- Rainsford falls off the boat

**Pt. 1: Zaroff sees Rainsford washing up on the beach. Without washing up on the beach, or falling off the boat, Zaroff never would have had game to chase. **

“Off to the right [of the island, a man] heard shots, and his ears, expert in such matters, could not be mistaken. Again he heard the sound, and again. Somewhere, off in the blackness, [I] had fired [my] gun.”(pg. 2).

Part 2- Zaroff leaves a trail for Rainsford to follow him to the mansion.

Zaroff finds Rainsford passed out on the beach. Instead of capturing him then and there, Zaroff wants to play a game. He decides to create a crime scene by murdering one of his sailors.

“Some wounded thing--by the evidence, a large animal--had thrashed about in the underbrush; the jungle weeds were crushed down and the moss was lacerated; one patch of weeds was stained crimson,” (pg. 4)

Part 3- Zaroff sneaks back into his mansion to greet Rainsford

Zaroff sneaks back into the mansion through a secret side door. He greets Rainsford at the door, and then "invites" him to dinner. Then Zaroff tells Rainsford that they are going to hunt tonight.

“Tonight,"[I said to Rainsford], "we will hunt--you and I."(pg. 10)

Part 4- Zaroff hunts Rainsford in the middle of the jungle

Zaroff sends Rainsford into the jungle with a hunting knife. He summarizes all of the things that he survived that Rainsford put in place for him (the traps, the quicksand, and whenever Rainsford leaps from the cliff).

"Rainsford did not want to believe what his reason told him was true, but the truth was as evident as the sun that had by now pushed through the morning mists. [I] was playing with him!" (pg. 13)

Rainsford lies in wait

The general is celebrating killing Rainsford for the day. Rainsford ends up murdering Zaroff, but then he ends up taking over the island. Rainsford first hunts Ivan, and then he decides that he enjoys it as much as Zaroff did.

“Splendid! One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford!" (pg. 15)
