In this piece of dialogue when Clay was listening to the audio tapes his mom comes into the room and he gets scared and tries to hide it. The reader learns that Clay doesn't want his mom or anyone to see the tapes and he is scared. This is important to the plot because if anyone else sees the tapes, Clay will get in trouble because they will think he caused Hannah Bakers death.
