Born on the 2nd of October 1869 in India, Ghandi (or Gandhi) quickly became one of the most famous Indians to have ever lived. Ghandi's early religious beliefs came from his mother who believe in Vaishnavism a religion based around the Hindugod Vishnu. This religion focused on Self-Discipline and Non-violence. (BBC 2014) These beliefs influenced Ghandi’s religious beliefs and ethics.
Ghandi's family was well off. This allowed Ghandi to travel to London at 19 where he studied law. Ghandi wanted to use his new skills in 1891 to set up a law practice in India
(L Johnson 2017).

The next stage of Ghandi's life was hard. His law practice wasn't successful, and he wasn't sure what to do next. After his business fell apart he accepted a new job at a law firm in South Africa. Whilst in South Africa, Ghandi saw discrimination. He was forced off his first class train seat when he didn't give it up for a European passenger. This changed his view on the world drastically. This is when he began to form his belief of Satyagraha (Passive resistance).

In 1913 Ghandi won his first victory. He led 2,221 Indians living in South Africa on a protest walk from Natal to Transvaal. The people were protesting a £3 tax put on Indian workers. Ghandi was arrested and sentenced to 9 months in prison. However, his strike spread and was successful. This resulted in the abolition of the tax and the release of Ghandi. Not long after this in 1915 Ghandi moved to India where he fought for India's independence from Britain. (BBC 2014)

'The Salt March was a major protest led by Ghandi that took place in 1930' (L Johnson 2017).
The British government had a monopoly on salt and decided that they could make money by implementing a law preventing Indians from harvesting salt (A staple in the Indian diet) as well as taxing the purchase of salt. Ghandi saw this as an opportunity to begin his campaign of civil disobedience. During the salt march thousands of Indians walked 240 miles. This resulted in 6,000 arrests, but this was the first step in the unravelling of the British Raj (K Yip 2013). At the time nobody would even consider protesting against the British, but Ghandi defied everyone and fought for the independence of India.

Ghandi led India to independence in 1947 but the road was not easy. In the early 1900s the Indian government and people had a close-minded view on the future of India. Indian was and would always be British. In 1915 Ghandi returned to India with a plan to change this. Ghandi's protests were unlike any other before. They were peaceful but they still got there point across. When Ghandi walked 240 miles to a beach just to defy the government everybody knew about it. He opened the political spectrum in India and allowed people to think in a more Open minded way. But these protests did not make everyone happy. Muslim extremist did not like Ghandi’s views and fought against him in a campaign that eventually cost Ghandi his life.

Comparing Ghandi

Ghandi lived at a time when the world was changing and traditional views were becoming outdated and replaced by modern views. His world view was developed over his life starting from his mother’s religion and continuing through his time in Africa and into his adult life. Ghandi did not believe that one religion was right, he believed in equality and peace through all religions understanding each other. "I believe that if only we could read the scriptures of the different Faiths from the stand-point of the followers of those faiths, we should find that they were at the bottom, all one and were all helpful to one another". However, despite this Ghandi personally had a basic Hindu faith. Hindu told him to 'search for truth through non-violent means' that is what Ghandi made of his life. At the time, most people strongly believed in their faith and weren’t open to change. Ghandi changed this within himself, his followers and the worldwide community. Ghandi also believed that 'man's perception of god was limited by his own mind' This was strongly against most religions and views at the time.

Ghandi's philosophy was ‘peaceful warfare’. This meant breaking rules and protesting peacefully rather than hurting other people to achieve his goals. Ghandi's protests mostly occurred between the two world wars. This was a time when fighting didn't seem like a problem and many people would choose aggression over peace. As we know Ghandi did not believe in aggression. This part of his world view was different to the world views at the time.

Ghandi was an incredible person that people look up to today. He protested in a way that saved lives but still got its message across. He risked his life for the lives of others. Because of this I look up to him. His life has shown me that violence is not the answer. You can get your message across and be diplomatic without fighting. Ghandi also showed me to be resilient. He was sent to jail multiple times but he kept fighting for peace and the freedom of his people. In the end Ghandi did not win as he wanted to but his goal was well on its way and he knew that his predecessors would continue his goal to reach a truly free India. His people followed him and his impact was able to remain after his death. He was truely strong but not physically he was strong mentally and emotionally. Because of this i believe the i have a lot to learn from the incredible man that was Ghandi.
