When Doug meets the new people in town his first impression to them is always rough and thug-like.   When he first meets Lil Doug narrates for us, "This is what I knew: I was sounding like Lucas when he was being the biggest jerk he could be, which was usually just before he beat me up. I was sounding like Lucas. " This text proves to us that Doug does indeed know that he is being rude. He then says, " I decided I wouldn't be Lucas." This second statement really reinforces the idea of change in him.
