The heart has 4 chambers that pump blood. It has 3 layers the epicardium, myocardium, and endocardium that make up the heart wall. The cardiac skeleton stabilizes position of heart valves and physically isolated the atrial muscle tissue from the ventricular muscle tissue. A heart attack happens when coronary circulation becomes blocked.

There are 2 types of cardiac muscle cells involved in a heartbeat: contractile cells which produce contractions that propel blood, and noncontractile cells which control and coordinate the activities of the contractile cells. A heartbeat has 3 phases: rapid depolarization, the plateau, and repolarization

Cardiac muscle contractions is an active process, but relaxation is entirely passive. The atrial reflex involves adjustments in heart rate response to increase the venous return which is the flow of venous blood into the heart. The amount of blood that is pumped out of a ventricle with each heartbeat depends on filling time which is the duration of ventricular diastole when blood can flow into the ventricles.
