In most cases, not really. Older children do tend to have a higher IQ, and are treated differently than a youngest sibling, but that doesn't mean that birth order decides your whole personality. For example, a first born in a 2-child family will have a personality that's different from a firstborn in a 5-child family. - Anna Cauthon

Yes, Birth order does affect you personality because each kid would experience a different psychological environment. Yes, There are significant differences because younger sibling seem to be the most spoiled and more cared for than the rest.
-Katie

In my opinion yes because in most cases siblings are treated differently so that could affect your personality as if you are pampered and you have everything done for you then you will expect everything but if you have to look over a younger sibling then you will be more likely to be more responsible since you have had to look after someone else most of your life.
-Riley

Probably but it depends on the parents and how they treat each child or the child if the parents only have one. For example only children are spoiled more by the parents because there is only one child but that same child might have to do all the chores while parents with several kids might have a favorite child that does nothing but gets all the attention while the others are treated as good. But then there are parents with several children but no favorites those children typically better behaved and more responsible because the parents are not pampering any of them.

I think that birth order affects the role you have in the family as well as maturity level.

I understand that the oldest must learn to talk very early, to get what they need and or want. The younger sibling has the oldest who usually - based on personal experience - will ¨talk for them¨ and help them get what they need. In order to have younger siblings, the oldest ends up watching them.

If anything traumatic happens within the family - the oldest will usually remember better / endure more causing them to ¨grow up¨ faster or mature at an early age. I think that when an older sibling has one or more brothers/sisters they feel the need to care for them and (my favorite line) taking care of children they didn't make. Along with this comes suppressing feelings and not really being able to talk to anyone because then you aren't ¨mature enough¨ or you ¨arent adult enough¨. Needing someone to talk to is for ¨young children¨ and dealing with emotions alone is ¨older¨.

The expectations will also be strict for the first child because they are new parents and want you perfect. They will loosen up for the next few seeing as you are doing fine and didn't need most of the rules anyway.

Spoiling the younger comes in when the oldest or the older children (plural) don't need much anymore (growing up) and mom/dad does not need to split the money which leaves an undivided amount for the last child. They don't have to worry about spending on 3+ kids they only take care of one now.

I could go on but, to sum it up, yes I believe the birth order will affect your general personality and what roles you take in society/home.

-Margaret T.

In my opinion maybe a little, but not really. Your personality depends on many things. Like what you like and how you were raised. Your birth order may affect how independent you are or how you seem like a natural leader. But how you act at different times for different things is based on your feelings, not the order you are your siblings were born. Katelyn Farmer

I don't believe that birth order causes a child to have a certain personality. In different environments, children will develop different personalities. I think that it will mostly depend on how they were raised, who they spend the most time around, and the major events in their early life. In some cases, yes, birth order will affect your personality, but there is no way to be absolutely certain of that. In conclusion, I think that your birth order can be associated with your personality, but doesn't directly create it. -Kristin Hargett
