This film, though it came out in 1980, 19 years before I was born, somehow doesn't feel old or dated. In a lot of ways, it could have come out yesterday. The way that it manages to deal with a topic that has such dark undertones in such a tongue in cheek way, all while really making you think about gender equality, the fight that our mothers, grandmothers, and their mothers before them had to go through to allow us to live in the world we do today. There is still a long way to go, but the road has now been paved for women of all races and sexual orientations to continue to fight for the generations after us

Office Culture/ The Glass Ceiling

Office Culture has changed quite a bit over the decades. When Nine to Five was released, women working was still a very new addition to the culture. 'many opportunities were still closed to women. From the 1940s to the 1970s, numerous surveys indicated that both men and women "expressed strong disinclinations to work for women bosses," (Douglas M. Branson, No seat at the table) As Nine to Five only came out in 1980 gives you an idea of how radical the film was at the time, not only did men dislike women working with them or higher up than them, many women were against this as well.
Characters such as Violet had to fight tooth and nail to get any form of respect from men or, even other women. Violet needed to have the kind of strength she did, for a reason, she and many women like her were well aware that if you want to get anywhere in an office job you have to work more than twice as hard as any man to get the baseline level of respect. That not bringing race/sexual orientation/disability into that factor.
This also gives you an idea of why they have a character like Ros in Nine to Five. I would guess you had a lot of women similar to her working in all kinds of industries.
An interesting article I found stated that A 2003 report by the federal Glass Ceiling Commission showed that only seven to nine percent of upper management at Fortune 1000 firms were women. According to a 2005 article by Paul Igasak on the Wall Street Journal’s Career site, a similar study showed that 97 percent of top executives at the same companies were white. Clearly, the effect is extremely pervasive throughout all sorts of industries.

Part of the reason for Nine to Fives' success was due to the second wave of feminism which was going on from the 1960s to the early 90s. First-wave feminism was “inspired by the abolition movement, their great-granddaughters were swept into feminism by the civil rights movement, the attendant discussion of principles such as equality and justice, and the revolutionary ferment caused by protests against the Vietnam War.” (Britannica, no date)
As stated by this article, America was under huge amounts of civil change and unrest, socially and politically, to the lead up of the production of Nine to Five. It was a time of change, which I can imagine helped with them actually being able to produce this film in the first place. A few years earlier and there is no way this film would have seen the light of day.

Second-wave feminism also helped to create such a wave with organizations such as the National Organisation for Women (NOW), founded in 1966. “It is the largest feminist group in the United States, with some 500,000 members in the early 21st Century.” (Britannica, 2019).
They were founded in 1966 by Betty Friedan, known for her 1963 book, The Feminine Mystique, which brought up new conversations on traditional gender roles. In August 1967 NOW members held their first picket to protest gender-segregated help-wanted advertisements in the New York Times.(OWHA, Molly Wolfe, 2015).
This helps you get a sense of how difficult it was for real women trying to get into the workforce, only 13 years before Nine to Five was released. Technically my character Violet would have been working at this time, and it really gives you a feel of how fragile her position in the workplace would have felt, in act one scene three of Nine to Five you get to watch this dynamic play out when Violet is having to bite her anger at the way Hart is speaking to her and Judy, even after working at the company for 15 years, it really gives me a sense of the frustration Violet would have been feeling by this point.
In 1973 NOW protesters organized Take Back the Night marches and vigils as a backlash against sexual assault and domestic and power-based violence against women, and five years later, two years before the release of Nive to Five, over 100,000 people decked in purple, white, and gold, marched in Washington DC to call for an extension to the deadline for ratification of the equal rights amendment, because they wanted to make the rights nationwide, rather than in some states.
(OWHA, Molly Wolfe, 2015)
This article really helps you understand just how much feminism and civil rights were at the forefront of America's social, political, and pop culture climate. Nine to Five managed to hit all of the right buttons when it came out making it an instant steadfast in pop culture. You can watch the power dynamics between, especially Hart and Dick towards the three main Women shift throughout the musical from start to finish, and the narrative of their stereotypes get flipped upside down, especially for Doralee and Judy.

The criminalisation of Abortion

To get a better understanding of Roe vs Wade and it's importance to The second wave of feminism in America at the time of Nine to Five. It will help to take a quick look at the criminalisation of abortion. The idea of abortion as we know it today did not exist till the the 1700s and early 1800s and even then it only referred to the "quickening" being the time when the fetus first began to make noticable movements. (Roe V. Wade is decided, History, 2009).
"The induced ending of a pregnancy before this point did not even have a name–but not because it was uncommon. Women in the 1700s often took drugs to end their unwanted pregnancies." (Roe V. Wade is decided, History, 2009)
The idea we have today about abortions through history is often, it wouldn't have been possible, or by the way the Catholic church goes on you'd think America- and the rest of the world- Has been stoning women to death(ironically) for having abortions since the dawn of humanity. Nope.
"Though the 19th century is seen as a time of more restrictive sexual mores, abortion was actually common: according to at least one estimate, one in every five women at the time had had an abortion. Abortifacients were hawked in store fronts and even door to door. Vendors openly advertised their willingness to end women’s pregnancies. And in private, women shared information about how to prevent conception and induce miscarriages."(Erin Blakemore, History, 2018) Its important to remember that pregnancy was dangerous, and consequences faced by unwed mothers were severe.
