Amazon's use of the Customer Life Cycle and Knowledge Management Principles

What is the Customer Life cycle?
the Customer Life Cycle comes from the practice of 'Customer Relations Management'. It's used to map the different stages a customer goes through from considering a product, to buying the product and also the post purchase stages where customer retention and loyalty is achieved (Sterne, J. 2016).

Amazon's one portal: Everything we buy from Amazon is through the same portal. This means that no matter what you're searching for as a consumer, there is only one web address for Amazon; and anything you are looking to buy can be purchased from there. this is extremely time efficient for those doing business with Amazon, it is a one-stop easy shopping experience.

Consistent presentation: Ranging from product specifications to reviews, All information is presented in the same way and order wherever it is possible (Rosenberg, M. 2014). This allows consumers to pinpoint product information on the webpage easily.

Customer Personalisation:
the Website itself picks up on customers browsing history and in turn, makes it seem like the website knows its users personally. For example the site reminds consumers of their previous search history, it recommends products that we may like and also connects us to additional products that we may be looking to buy in connection with the product that is currently being viewed. Furthermore what make's this service so amazing is that 'Amazon' are able to provide this service even for users that are not registered members (Rosenberg, M. 2014).

Easy Purchasing and Delivery: Once you have found the item you wish to purchase you are able to add it to your 'bag' and check out. You are then able to create an account or log in to an existing one; this section helps to update Amazon's Customer Relations system as personal details are being updated (All My Systems. 2016). Continuing through payment you have the choice of a number of different delivery services such as sending to a particular address (work, or home) or even an 'Amazon Locker' which is a self service delivery location where customers can pick up their parcels (amazon.co.uk. 2016). Customers are also able to choose the type of delivery they want to receive such as standard, next day or same day delivery.

Confirmation and updates: Amazon's uses a Enterprise Resource Management system (Amazon Web Services, 2016) that automatically sends an email to the customer once a product transaction has been completed. The email contains an overview of the customers order such as product description, customers name and address, and also notifies the customer that when the order has been dispatched their systems will automatically send them another email. This second email also contains a due delivery date.
Once the product has reached the consumer, a third email will be delivered confirming that the delivery has been received by the customer.

Keeping the consumer engaged:
about a week or so after the product has been received, Amazon's Enterprise Resource Management system sends an email to the customer asking them to provide any feedback about the product, and the email will also contain recommendations for other similar products.

The Enterprise Resource Management system used within Amazon is from the Software Compiere ERP Cloud Edition (Amazon Web Services. 2016). This particular system helps Amazon manage their financial, supply chains and operational activities. For example when a customer orders a product, the System automatically looks to find the optimal distribution warehouse/center for fulfilling the order.
It is what helps to make Amazon's supply chain so efficient; however the system itself is not the only reason as to why Amazon has changed the way that supply chains are being managed forever.(Bacheldor, 2004).

At some point in the future, 85% of the World's products will be available on Amazon (Simpson, P. 2016).
Amazon understood the importance of speedy shipping before many of their rivals. by having over 100 warehouses in the US alone they have been able to accelerate their delivering systems from 48 hours, to 24 hours, and even to the evening of the same day (Simpson, P. 2016).This has helped Amazon to impressively improve on their quality Management, as such a huge task of delivering a product on the same day of order is difficult, therefore their operations and activities must be well foreseen and maintain a desired level of excellence. For consumers living in select cities, they have the opportunity to download Amazon's mobile App 'Prime Now'; allowing them to have an arranged delivery made during specific hours of the day that are more convenient for them. This has made Amazon a direct competitor to other delivery services (burnson, F. 2016).
In developed markets, Amazon have recently introduced an electronic wand named 'Dash' which scans bar-codes and takes voice commands from consumers who wish to repeat a delivery, this device is mostly used in conjunction with Amazon's online grocer 'Amazon Fresh' to ensure that consumers never run out of a certain product e.g. kitchen rolls (Simpson, p. 2016).

A benefit of using the Customer Relations Management system is that it helps Amazon to better relationships with consumers and clientele. This is because the system is able to analyse specific customer interactions with Amazon; this draws in data about the consumer and helps the system to find out what it is the customer is looking for.

The technologies used by Amazon have increasingly had a positive effect for its consumers. For example using the correct software's for Amazons web page design has enabled consumers to get what they want quickly and easily. Furthermore the introduction of the 'Dash' wand has literally enabled consumers to purchase a repeat product with the click of their fingers. this wand makes products so accessible to its consumers, especially those who may not have time to go out and buy their daily products in store.
Having many warehouses all over the World, it is clear to see that Amazon has become an expert at delivering products to its consumers the right way. Amazon have benefited from this as the company's image is now held at such a high standard. Being at such a level of expertise means that many consumers will be willing to purchase products from them rather than another deliverable service. this gives Amazon a competitive advantage over its other rivals such as E bay and Best Buy.

Amazon's Electronic Wand 'Dash'

Easy, no log in review for Kindle users.
When a consumer finishes reading an E book from Amazon kindle They may choose to review it. However in order for the reader to review the book they must firstly go online, log into their amazon user account, search the book and then place the review. For this reason many readers do not place helpful reviews as it is so inconvenient for them. A way that amazon could improve upon this and gain a handful of more reviews, is to give Kindle users the ability to review their books by simply clicking on the books on their devices. Thereby a review can be placed conveniently with little effort and in turn Amazon will receive more product reviews that may encourage a consumer to purchase products.

Profesional purchase recommendations by a profesional
Amazon.com is one of the best online retail website with best customer satisfaction, however, shoppers were less pleased with their purchases during 2015 than they were a year earlier. (American Customer Satisfaction Index Retail Report, 2015)
A possible solution is to include a recommendation and comparison section provided by a professional from Amazon by department.
If a customer is looking for a new home audio system, the website will show a section into the department of 'Music, video & games', where the online customer could read the opinion of a professional, to help the customer to choose the best product, avoiding fake reviews or products that in reality are not as good as the description says.
