In this film, the gender expectations of males are analyzed and dissected to reveal hurt and psychological traumas that shape the societal problems of violence, pain, and isolation that plagues our culture. We hear from many men and boys that have been brought up in this masculine forward environment and how those expectations have shaped them as individuals. Some are in prison for murder and committing violent acts. Others have children or work with youths in a mentoring/supportive manner. Each is trying to understand how to be a male and discuss the stigma that surrounds this identity.

As a teenager, I had a rough time getting any of my emotion to be seen or heard. Even as a female, there is a hard lesson as a child who is consistently being told that to get emotional is to disrespect the people you are talking to. Whether it is because I have worked for something and in the end, promises are broken and it is unable to be attained or the pent up emotion exploding because the expression was taken away from me.

There was a saying in my house, "if you cry, you are guilty." My step mom had my dad believing this and to this day, he still does. As an adult, I am still not allowed to show emotion in the presence of my parents because it will be misconstrued as disrespectful, attention seeking and manipulative.

Art and the freedom of expression it gives me on a daily basis is the reason I am not totally messed up to this day. I can only imagine those in this world who are deprived of even are or writing as a way to vent. After most holidays, when my family gets together, I will literally sit down and write all of the things that are bothering me on a piece of paper, walk outside and burn it.

Holding on to anger and sadness then allowing it to simmer has been horrible in my past and has even caused me to make some harsh decisions about my family. Now that I have the knowledge to let it go and make peace with other people opinions and perceptions, I feel so much lighter.

Advice that I have for anyone in a place where their emotion is not considered a right, is as follows;

1. Breathe. Everyone has an opinion and its one among billions.
2. Take a deep breath. Gather all of the pent up pain, anger, sorrow and hurt.
3. Breathe out slowly. Imagine that the breath you breathe out is a gust of wind, taking with it the negative energy that you feel inside.
4. Take another breath. Taking in all of the good of the world around you. One day, there will be someone who can speak freely to about all that is inside of you. When you find them, you will instinctively cherish them.
5. If this doesn't work, buy a pool noodle and a pillow. Get the pent up aggression out using these because when it does come out, it may be on the wrong person or at the wrong time.

As a boy who grew up in the United States, I know what it feels to be told to be a man. While a broad term, it is also very powerful and destructive. Especially in adolescent years, everyone faces vulnerability in fitting into their own personality and growing up. During this time, people rely on those they look up to. Many people are forced to simply deal with it and that showing emotion is a sign of weakness, when this is absolutely not the case. Humans are not meant to simply express happiness and strength. We feel the full spectrum that we do because we are supposed to, and as a child the ability to express these emotions is vital in developing proper coping skills. This is a large reason why so many kids lash out when they are in distress. Often, those who are most neglected need the attention they so desperately desire. Speaking through emotions has only recently become a more prominent part of American culture, but in earlier years kids were often told to simply deal with it on their own. This can lead to outlast and an emotional explosion of some sorts.
