The challenges faced with digital forensics is network spawns and multiple time zones in multiple jurisdictions, network data being available (on and off online), and huge bandwidths. This also includes hardware issues, software issues, and legal issues. Digital forensics includes a chain of custody that explains the logical sequence that records the sequence of custody, control, transfer, analysis and disposition of physical or electronic evidence in legal cases. Each step in the chain is essential as if broke, the evidence may be rendered inadmissible. This preserves that the chain of custody is about following the correct and consistent procedure and hence ensuring the quality of evidence.

Chain of Custody in digital forensics can have multiple meanings. Digital Forensics can also be known as the paper trail or forensic link, or chronological documentation of the evidence. Chain of custody indicates the collection, sequence of control, transfer and analysis. It also documents details of each person who handled the evidence, date and time it was collected or transferred, and the purpose of the transfer. It demonstrates trust to the courts and to the client that the evidence has not tampered. It can also be referred to as the logical sequence that records the sequence of custody, control, transfer, analysis and disposition of physical or electronic evidence in legal cases.

Encryption is the process converting information or data into a code, especially to prevent unauthorized access. Forensic Databasers use "cryptanalysis" to retrieve the encrypted data and is useful for digital investigators. Encryption pertains to digital forensics by the use of cryptography and its techniques in digital forensics is widely increasing. Investigators are limited to information on devices that they can access. When a hard drive is completely encrypted, the digital forensic investigators have difficulty in finding the stored data and the investigative options are limited. Some examples are computer documents, emails, text and instant messages, transactions, images and internet history. This information can be gathered from electric devices and used as evidence.

Digital Evidence has changed in the last thirty years due to the increase of mobile and technology devices. Back then not everybody had touchscreen phones and high speed tech devices and WiFi. Where we would be without digital evidence is that half of the investigation cases will be useless and there wouldn't be any trace, probably 50% of the world would lose access to digital footprints and everything would be useless. Digital Evidence is a reliable resource due to the things that are hidden and not seen by others. For example if there was no digital evidence there wouldn't be a dark web. There wouldn't be any cases solved, illegal rings busted, and digital footprints leading back to everyone.
