1) Id-only operates in the unconsciousness, contains the basic drives such as hunger, thirst, elimination, sex, and aggression. This piece causes us to make sure our basic needs are met. It wants what it wants when it wants it. Can picture what is wants if it is not available. 
2) Ego- represents reason and good sense operating on by taking into account what is practical. This piece looks for a way to satisfy our needs while also satisfying society. 
3) Superego- the internal moral or conscience. This stage is significant because it is the first time an infant seeks sexual pleasure, this case being by sucking the mother's breast. If this stage isn't handled correctly, the child can grow up to develop oral fixations or can develop a clinging dependence. 
2) Anal Stage- by about 18 months to about 3 years old. This stage is significant because the child gains the ability to control their elimination. Depending on how the parents potty train their child at this stage, the child's personality can become one of perfectionism or carelessness. 
3)Phallic Stage- from ages 3-6. This is a crucial stage because it involves the possible development of incestuous desires for the parent of the opposite sex. Most of the time this is solved by the child identifying more with the parent of their same sex. This is significant because failure of this can result in homosexuality, penis envy, or becoming resentful of strong masculine figures (with boys).
4)Latency Stage- between the ages of 6 and 12. This is the stage where sexual impulses remain dormant and not very significant. 
5) Genital Stage- entered at the age of puberty. This is where the child moves to yearn a sexual partner of the opposite gender. This is significant because during this time, what attracts two people of the opposite gender develops uniquely in each person.
