Common school implied that, by generating a shared community of mutual interest, people of diverse backgrounds could live peacefully and productively in a common society (Gutek, 2011, p. 242).]]> 2017-01-15 20:47:26 UTC https://padlet.com/lipford93/by52y00qmw60/wish/147262013 lipford93 https://padlet.com/lipford93/by52y00qmw60/wish/147262219 Our society today is at its most diverse and that includes the school system.  Mann's idea of the common school became more of a reality in our time when the court case Brown vs. board of education was won.  This ended legal segregation in schools and allowed for a more diverse school environment.  Today it has gone further than that with the concept of inclusion classrooms.  Not only are public schools open to children of all ethnic backgrounds but also those students that have a disability.  In my school there is a range of students with a learning disability that are in the general classrooms with their peers.  Thanks to IDEA they receive services they may need at different times throughout the day, but they are able to spend the majority of their day in a classroom with their general ecuation teacher. For example, I have a student in my classroom with a severe speech disability.  He works with a speech pathologist differnet times throughout the week to enhance his speech and pronunciation. With the use of Goddard schools, headstart and VPI programs, and even some daycare settings, children are beginning their educational journeys at a young age. By the age of 5 children have absorbed many skills to use in the public school setting. There are also different methods of teaching that are becoming more prevalent in the school environment to provide a more student centered learning, something that Rousseau was in favor of. One of these new stategies is the use of Kagan in the classroom. This new style of learning promotes class building activities, cooperative learning and enhanced engagement. By providing fun activities to get kids moving and thinking critically, it also allows for them to work in teams, partners, and groups to celebrate and encourage each others learning process.  Kagan allows the teacher to plant a seed of an idea in the students brains and then take a step back to see what they think by giving them time to discuss and decide with peers as opposed to lecture style learning.  This builds self-confidence and promotes accoutability in their learning, which makes them more inspired to desire more information.
