We'd often talk about our similar experiences in band. Jane loved playing music and started out as a flutist. She wanted to learn to play bugle for her camp friends during their reunions. Her love of music was lifelong. She was an incredible supporter of the arts at PDS. Attending concerts, shows, gallery openings, musicals; you name it. Through conversations we learned we had even more in common. A deep love for camp and sharing stories of our camp friends. I spend many summers at Girl Scout camp and her stories always hit home. We were also both avid fans of Fixer Upper. Often sharing predictions about Chip and Joanna's growing family. Jane was living proof that we are all more connected that we know beyond the surface.

I never realized that the reason I do things a certain way in homeroom is because Jane did them, and that's just the way they're done. She's the reason I make the kids learn to line up alphabetically by last name for fire drills, silently. She's the reason we play "I'm going to Thanksgiving and I'm going to bring..." after the Thanksgiving Assembly to fill the time until dismissal. Also, at Convocation, Jane would say, "Remind the kids not to lock their knees! We don't want them to pass out in the heat!" And I do remind them! Jane understood this. 
Of course, being organized and keeping things consistent year after year was key.
Like everyone, I got clippings in my mailbox--an old-school way to connect. In my case: postcards about Texas from ephemera shows as well as articles about fencing.
Even brought her some sand from Tunisia!

One year, she and I drove out to Gettysburg in the spring to check out some new exhibits. Jane and I talked all the way there and back. She had endless stories and experiences to share and really could connect with anyone. On the way back, we stopped at her brother's office, and I got to meet her family. Jane got to know my family as well. Every holiday season, she stopped to see my husband at the Princeton Shopping Center where he sold Christmas trees. Sometimes they had pizza together. My daughter has so many sweet gifts with which to remember Jane. Jane connected with everyone. She always took the time to get to know people on a deep level---their passions, hobbies, families. I loved my conversations with Jane which ranged from Middle Eastern affairs to the shape of the Flik dining trays to everything in between. When my husband got a job at Rutgers, sure enough, Jane approached me the next day to let me know that his assistant was a childhood friend of hers. Jane spoke so fondly of camp friends, Bucknell friends, PDS friends.... During this difficult time, I find comfort in knowing that Jane's life was full of meaningful relationships, and students also felt close to Ms. Grigger. I feel blessed to have had Jane as a close friend.
Jane Grigger truly made a difference on earth.
