Scabies is caused by an eight-legged mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. It burrows into the skin and lays eggs. When these eggs hatch, they rise to the surface of the skin where they mature. This causes the skin to itch.

Scabies is an STI that is caused by the burrowing of a mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. Once this mite lays and hatches its eggs, intense itching follows. Scabies is highly contagious and people in close contact with a victim of this infection are at high risk of contracting it. Especially with skin-to-skin contact. This infection is easily treated, though, and the medications are made to eradicate the mites and their eggs. As soon as one starts to take their medications, results will appear in a few weeks at most.

Since scabies is highly contagious and is spread through skin-to-skin contact, infants get this infection by direct contact with a person who has scabies, direct contact with an animal that has scabies, sharing a bed or wearing another child's clothes who is infected, and by spending most of their time in day-care.
