Information literacy applies to the consumption and the production of information in both print and digital formats. Consumers of information should be able to identify, locate, and evaluate the information they need. Producers of information should be able to create effective and accurate media. The development of information literacy is a gradual process that does not always move in a linear fashion.

Information literacy is searching, finding, assessing, and sharing information effectively. Growing information literacy enables learners to interact comfortably and confidently with information in these ways.
Critical thinking and best-use practices are also key parts of information literacy. Both enable users to get the most out of the information they interact with.

Information literacy is the knowledge of how to search for, locate, and evaluate information using effective and reliable techniques. In the 21st century, being skilled in using digital media and technology to access information is a mandatory part of being information literate. This is important because society is dependent on information science and literacy to find information that supports their academic, professional, and personal needs.

To me, Information literacy is the ability for all people to find, evaluate, analyze, and use information in a variety of ways. In our ever changing technological world, information is always at our fingertips – some factual and some not. It is important for people – adults and children – to have the tools needed to seek the information needed and use it however they deem necessary. Information literacy allows us to be critical thinkers and use different types of information to be successful.

I think Information Literacy is the ability to find the information you are looking for, whether that be by searching the internet or a database, finding a book or other material in a library, and then using the information searched for properly. As a society it is useful to be information literate so that we are self sufficient, and know how to use and share information with others.

Information literacy includes media and digital literacy. Being information literate is a life long process because information is constantly being produced and changing.

Information literacy is the knowledge and ability to realize that you need to find more information. It is the ability to gather, search, find the information you are needing. But that is not all, you need to understand the information you found and be able to use that found information in the way you needed.

The important part of Information literacy is understanding when the information gathered or taught is not correct, then going back to that stage where the learner was/is stuck. When the information literacy chain is stopped then learning slowed down, growth does not happen, and progress is not made.

Information Literacy is holding a set of skills that enable you to locate the information for a purpose as well as evaluate information in a meaningful way. Critical thinking skills are a key asset an individual needs to develop in order to become information literate. Today, with the advances in the manner in which information is stored and retrieved, information seekers must be up to date on current information technologies.

After looking over the week 2 readings, I would add that another key part to information literacy is to have the ability to create meaningful useful information. I also realized that I forgot to include the importance of the ethical use of information.

Information literacy is a set of skills related to conducting searches and finding information accurately. It includes not only be able to find information through discovery and exploration, but also being able to articulate for what information you are looking or what question you are seeking to answer. It also includes the ability to discern whether the information you have discovered is accurate and the ability to detect bias in the information found. Especially in our technological age where information is constantly at our finger tips and where there is in fact an overload of information and media, it is crucial that everyone is able to find exactly what they need and judge the content. With fake news rampant, we must not only be able to find what we are looking for but also use critical thinking to evaluate the information before making conclusions. Information literacy should encompass multiple formats - on and offline and also seek to account for access to information barriers.

Information Literacy is the ability to effectively locate information, make sure it is reliable, correct, relevant, and useful. With the vast amount of information available, it is so important to know how to weed through all of it to find what we need. To be able to search for, and decipher information requires critical thinking skills which are extremely necessary in academics, careers, and life in general. We can continuously develop information literacy skills throughout our life by constantly looking for, learning, and ethically creating new information.

Information literacy is the ability to identify, locate, evaluate, use and create information effectively. As the variety and format of information we engage with expands, so does the amount of poor information. Being able to discern the quality of information and knowing how to use it helps one bypass irrelevance and build knowledge that supports positive change.

Information literacy is being able to find the information you need when you need it (digital or physical) and the ability to discern between reliable and unreliable data sources. This is critical because in our modern society, we are sorting through and evaluating the validity of information daily. Additionally, we must acknowledge that we are all media creators and that no media is value-neutral. We all must be on the lookout for hidden agendas, including from advertisers disguised as news or other neutral content.

“Information Literacy” is a broad, all-encompassing term that covers the ability to locate information and determine that it is accurate and factual, understand and absorb various forms of information (print, digital, etc.), and be able to share that information. It is important because today there are many different forms and sources of information available (web, print, and otherwise) and we need to be able to differentiate between false and factual information and thus be able to share this with others.

My definition of "Information Literacy" would be the ability to identify, locate and gain access to resources appropriate for the information need. Not only being able to locate this information but also being able to determine if this information is from a reliable source! Then being able to apply the information as well as acknowledge where this information stems from are all very important aspects of information literacy. According to UNESCO'S "Five Laws of Media and Information Literature" media and information literacy is not acquired at once it is a lived experience.
