1. Describe the major characters: Ralph, Piggy, and Jack.
- Ralph is extremely full of himself and doesn't care about anyone's opinion. He is the type of person that goes through life without much thought, he lives in the present.
- Piggy is fat, he has asthma, and is the complete opposite of Ralph and any of the other bigguns. He plans out what to do, gives them a lot of thought, and cares a lot about other people's feelings.
- Jack is authoritative. He always wants to be in the center of attention and feared. He is also the type of person to harp over unnecessary things, he doesn't know what to prioritize.

2. What instances of foreshadowing occur in this chapter? What predictions can you make about what sorts of things might happen later in the novel?
- when Piggy is introduced and he tells Ralph what people at school used to call him and begged him not to tell anyone about it, I predict that Ralph was going to tell people and Piggy would get bullied.

3. What do you think the “sound of the shell” and the conch itself might symbolize?
- I think that the conch symbolizes authority and power, and the sound of the shell brings all the boys together which announces that a meeting is about to start.

- in the beginning, he was more open about Ralph being the chief and him being his second, but as the story advances, we can see his behavior shift from that to resenting Ralph and the rules that were put in place. His obsession with hunting and proving that he is fearless clouds his judgment.

2. What is making it difficult for Ralph and Jack to communicate and get along?  Where do you think their differences will lead?
- they both have different views on what to do and have different priorities. Ralph believes that building shelter is more important while Jack thinks hunting is. Both boys are stubborn and think they're right instead of coming together and compromising for the good of the group.

3. What does this chapter reveal about Simon‟s personality, and what importance do you think this will have later in the novel?  (How do you think the other boys will react to Simon?)
- I think that Simon will take over Jack's spot in this society because he seems to get along well with Ralph and the rules he placed. he is seeing life on the island much more differently. he is more serious about what needs to be done and is taking charge. His first task having a serious assembly and talking about things that absolutely need to be talked about instead of goofing around.

Jack countered a lot of things that Ralph said. and challenged his authority. This shocked Ralph because he never expected Jack of all people to fight with him over authority.

3. What does Percival say when Jack asks him where the beast lives?  Why do you think he says this?
He tells them that the beast lives in the sea. What disturbing thing do the group of hunters and Ralph do immediately after their encounter with the pig?  How is Ralph's behavior surprising?  What does this behavior foreshadow?
After encountering the pig, they all get excited, especially Ralph, and starts acting as hunters and attacking Roger (the pig). They get overexcited and actually starts hurting him. Ralph's behavior is surprising because he is usually calm and composed but in this instant he lost control and was acting like a child. I think this foreshadows him losing sight of himself and what he believes in in the future.

2. Why do you think Simon is so eager to volunteer to go across the island to tell Piggy and the littluns what they're doing?
I think he'd rather go back because he believes that the true beast lives in the boys, so he would much rather walk back to Piggy alone than wander the forest with them.

3. Why do you think Jack insists on going up the mountain to look for the beast even though it's already dark when they arrive?  What internal conflict does Ralph feel about the decision to go up the mountain in the dark?
Jack insists on going up the mountain even though it's getting dark because he wants to prove to everyone that he is brave. I think it is to show everyone what a good and generous he is, which would draw them to join his tribe. He even offers meat to Ralph and Piggy so that he looks like the bigger person which gives the boys a bigger reason to join Jack's tribe

2. Why does Jack command the boys to dance and chant, and why is this an effective leadership tactic?  What psychological effect does dancing and chanting have on the boys? 
He does this so that the little ones, who are obviously terrified, can take their mind off of the storm. The dancing and chanting successfully take their minds off of the storm and they all start participating in it.

3. What is the “beast” that the boys kill?  How is this event ironic and especially tragic (not only for the “beast,” but for everyone on the island)?  How is it symbolically significant?
The "beast" that the boys kill is actually Simon. Their first impression of Ralph was that he was a strong leader, almost like an adult. But then the twins saw his real side which was a lost, little boy who didn't know any better.

2. Why are the boys‟ attempt to get back Piggy‟s specs and get the other boys to maintain a signal fire bound to fail?
It was because Jack's group outnumbered Ralph's, and they wouldn't have agreed to compromise.

3. How is the destruction of the conch symbolically significant?
The destruction of the conch symbolizes the end of peace and the end of Ralph's leadership. it shows that all hope is lost.

loss of innocence. you can see the development throughout the book as the kids act violently and savagely.

2. What insights about human nature, human psychology, and human society does the novel present? How are they expressed?
when all these kids are left stranded on a deserted island with no laws and adults in sight, they had to take on roles of authority and build a civilization with rules and regulations. From this, we can tell that it isn't going to end well considering they are kids and sooner or later everything they built will come crumbling down.
 
3. Discuss the deterioration of the “society” on the island.  What circumstances, events, and psychological forces cause this deterioration?
the lack of authority and loss of innocence caused the deterioration of the society. the kids that had to step up and take on important roles were after all kids and living in a place like that doesn't help when it comes to savagery. eventually, the kids are bound to veer off course and live recklessly. 
 
4. Discuss the extensive use of symbolism in the novel.  Examples of important symbols are the conch, the fire, the beast, Piggy‟s glasses, and the “lord of the flies,” as well as Piggy, Ralph, Simon, and Jack themselves.
the conch: symbolizes the order, laws, and authority of the civilization
the fire: symbolizes hope. hope that they would be rescued
the beast: symbolizes the monster that resides in them all that bound to reveal itself being exposed in an environment like that
piggy's glasses: symbolizes wisdom
lord of the flies: resembles everyone's inner beast/ voice
piggy: resembles wisdom and knowledge 
ralph: resembles authority and order
jack: resembles chaos  
 
5. What is your opinion of the novel—is the story convincing?  Does it present a realistic vision of human nature? Have you experienced or observed things that would either support or contradict Golding‟s ideas?
I thought the novel was interesting and it does sort of present a realistic vision of human nature. If there weren't any law and order, people would go wild and lose control, especially the kids. an experience I have of this is when you're in a class without a teacher, everyone forgets the rules that were set and does their own things.
